Where to stay in Amsterdam

Hi -
We, (two retired couples) are arriving in Amsterdam September 15th. and staying 3 or 4 nights. We would like to rent an apartment. We plan to take some day trips, so we would like to be close to public transportation.
We will appreciate any advice you can give on the area of the city to stay in and any specific recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

Jordaan, Oude Pijp and Plantage are good districts. The first and last ones have many canals. From any of these areas you have plenty of public transportation to major train stations and many attractions accessible on foot.

Avoid the first "canal belt", too noisy and too busy (and very expensive for similar facilities).

Jordaan in West Amsterdam has Old World ambience, with quiet canals, good restaurants. It’s also just minutes on foot to Dam Square.
Southwest Amsterdam has two main areas I recommend; near Leidseplein (more central) and near Vondelpark (farther away). The streets near Leidseplein have restaurants and are walkable (or easy tram) access to the center of town.
