11 days in the Netherlands

Last year we visited France and ended up flying out of Amsterdam because it was the same price as CDG. We had 2.5 days there, one of which was spend in Keukenhof/biking in terrible weather haha. We'd planned on doing the Van Gogh museum our first day but ended up skipping it in favor of just walking around, because as soon as we got there I fell in love. I'm half Dutch so maybe I should have known that would happen! Regardless, I was determined to return to the Netherlands. I used points to book our return for this April and this time we have 11 days in the country (mainly because of how the points ended up working out but I'm not mad about it haha). My questions for anyone who has spent a good amount of time there:

  1. I have a list of other cities to visit (Aklmaar for the cheese market, Haarlem, Utrecht, Delft, Den Haag (my Oma is from there), Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk, Woerden....) and I'd love opinions on them.

  2. I'd also love some feedback on which cities, if any, we should actually spend the night in outside of Amsterdam. I'm not a big fan of 1 night here, 2 nights there, where you spend a lot of time moving hotels & checking in/out of places. Even if it's more expensive, I'm wondering if it would be best to base ourselves in Amsterdam and do day trips to some of the cities we want to visit and then pick maybe 1-2 other cities to stay in (maybe Delft or Den Haag and Utrecht). Rick Steves says in his book that if we're going to spend the night anywhere outside of Amsterdam, to make it Delft. Opinions on that?

  3. The other thing we're considering is a couple days in another country like Belgium or Paris again (because we really did love Paris). I'm both worried that I'll get "bored" in the Netherlands for 11 days, but also worried that if we do something like Belgium/Paris for a few days we won't feel like we really saw everything we wanted in the Netherlands.

Bit of background on us: I drink but my husband doesn't, so probably no brewery/distillery tours for us. Besides a canal tour (with Those Dam Boat Guys) we didn't do any real tourist things last time, so we will be doing 1-2 museums and probably the Anne Frank house this time. We'll be doing Keukenhof again and hopefully will have much better weather for biking, and the plan is to spend around noon-5pm biking around the south Holland area that day. Not huge art people but I love history & ruins. We loved the food and hope to come back home a few pounds heavier! ^-^

I was in the Netherlands Sept/Oct. 2023 and also fell in love with it. I stayed in Delft (loved it) and Haarlem (did not love it). I really liked Utrecht. I do not see Leiden, Gouda, or Hoorn on your list.

I have Dordretch on my list for a return trip thanks to these videos:

So many great options.

Bruges would be my choice for a location in another country. But, with just 11 days, I would probably pick 2 locations in the Netherlands.

My trip report might be helpful:

Thank you @Carrie, I was just checking out your trip report! I'll need to look up what all there is to do in Gouda. Leiden was a possibility for the day we bike after Keukenhof, but if you think it's worth a full day that's good to know too!

We've visited many Dutch cities, but because everything is so relatively close, we've only stayed in Amsterdam, Delft, and Leiden. Staying in those areas open up a bunch of side/day trips to place like Rotterdam, the Hague, Haarlem, and Zaanse Schans or smaller places like the Edam/Marken area. For us, Utrecht is NEXT on our homebase list for our next visit (and Amsterdam again).

You mention Anne Frank House, so I strongly encourage you to couple that with Amsterdam's Resistance Museum and Haarlem's Corrie ten Boom House. Three strong perspectives on the German occupation in WWII that feed each other quite well - but should be done on DIFFERENT days to avoid museum info fatigue.

There are several art museums that are either "must see" or "really should see", so make time for the Rijksmuseum (at a minimum) but also consider other ones in the Netherlands - we enjoyed the Mauritshuis in the Hague after seeing the main Vermeer exhibit in Amsterdam but just after the Girl with a Pearl Earring was returned to its home. Plenty more art museums depending on your interests.

Bored with 11 days? No, but I also think you definitely will want to mix city with small town with countryside with coastal towns, etc.. Weather is a BIG factor in how much you can really get out and just see and be in the cities and countryside. My wife and I love cycling, so we make sure we have ready access to bikes and pretty much plan our day around riding to/from itinerary highlights, but also make the cycling a regular highlight of its own. An example would be our visit to Haarlem and the CtB House from our hotel in Amsterdam where we just set out on our bikes, rode to Haarlem, visited the CtB House, did a city walking tour, had lunch, and then rode to the Zaandvort beach area, before returning to Haarlem for dinner, and then riding back to the hotel in Leidseplein. A great adventure, and a great way to see all the areas along the way at 10mph. We've done the same for Zaanse Schans, Edam, Rotterdam, and many others on rides from our homebase. Despite LOTS AND LOTS of food, we don't return from the Netherlands any heavier :)

Regarding Belgium or Paris, I'm on the fence because we also love Paris. And for Belgium - especially if just a day trip to one city (folks love talking up Brugges, but I might choose Ghent) - it is sooo close, it might be another way to mitigate your boredom worry. I don't think there is an "OMG Belgium is so different from the Netherlands", but it is different enough that it can reset the trip a little bit.

Regarding Delft, with the exception of picking a different hotel next time, I would say it was lovely. I think Leiden just edged it but we were also in a much nicer hotel and also there on a return trip to the Netherlands, so had a bit more overall comfort with the Netherlands by that time. Delft was well situated for visiting Rotterdam or the Hague, too. Find a good hotel recommendation for Delft, and I think you'll enjoy it. Or choose Leiden and you'll enjoy it. Or Utrecht where I think you'd enjoy it (and we hope we do too). My feeling for an 11 day trip is that 2 (max 3) hotels is best. I'd aim for most of the time in Amsterdam, and you can easily do many day trips from there, and somewhere like Delft or Leiden or Utrecht really just helps break up the "one place for too long" that some people dislike but others love. If you travel light, moving to a new hotel in the Netherlands is pretty easy and doesn't eat up most of a day like it would if you changed hotels from say Madrid to Barcelona or Paris to Nice (or Amsterdam).
