Hilton vs Sheraton at Amsterdam Schiphol airport

I'll be in Amsterdam just for a half day and night in mid-September.
I arrive in AMS at 2pm on a Saturday (from Schengen) and depart next morning (Sunday) 9:30am to USA.
I've decided to stay at one of the airport hotels. Will drop off my bag, then take train to city center, (hoping to get an evening ticket to Anne Frank's house), explore the city center, and take late train back to airport hotel.

I had booked Sheraton but got a better price with Hilton. So I now have 2 (cancellable) reservations and need to make a decision! I understand the Sheraton is slightly closer/less walk, but the Hilton seems newer/updated. I won't have breakfast at the hotel so really just looking for a good night of sleep.

Has anyone stayed at either in the last year or so?
And should I plan to eat around the museum before I take a late train back to the hotel, or are there late night options at the airport/hotel for dinner?

I haven't stayed at either hotel but have stayed at Citizen M twice. There are mostly fast food options at the plaza level at Schiphol just above the train station, including a FEBO (which is...an experience). Some are open until 22:00 https://www.schiphol.nl/en/at-schiphol/eat-and-drink/facilities?location=Landside

I would probably find food in the city rather than that. Since you have such a limited window be sure to buy your Anne Frank tickets on the official website and within the right time frame (many, many posts on that here in the forum).

Thanks CL. CitizenM is more expensive for my date and the tight bedroom might make me feel claustrophobic.

Thanks for letting me know about food options.
I have it on my calendar to logon eaaaarly on the Tuesday my ticket window opens up.

I am claustrophobic and didn't feel uneasy in the Citizen M rooms, and I had to share with another person on one trip. But given you have less expensive options I'd go with those. And FWIW, you might try logging in to Anne Frank tickets the week before you need them so you can see options, how the process works, and how quickly tickets sell. For your dates you might not have a massive rush but you never know.

Enjoy your trip!

Hello again!

Two years ago we stayed at the Citizen M. It's definitely a unique room - kind of a mix between the efficiency of an RV and the high tech of a 'home of the future'.

A couple of months ago we stayed at the Sheraton. We enjoyed it and can recommend it. We ate dinner at the restaurant there and it was good.

Your idea to pop into the city after dropping off your bags is smart. It's easy to get in and back. That's what we did two years ago. On that trip, we had a drink and did some people watching after our museum visits and then ate a small bite at the Citizen M.

The Hilton never saw an opportunity to charge extra that they miss. The price quoted may not be the final price.

Hi Joy, I’ve stayed at the Sheraton. Nice hotel & very convenient. I didn’t eat a meal there.

I appreciate all the responses. I may keep the Sheraton and cancel Hilton.

We stayed one night at the Sheraton because of a similar situation as yours, and it was very nice, quiet and convenient, but we did not eat any meals there.

We just stayed at the Hilton. No surprise charges. We showed up at 11am and were able to get in our room earlier. Very clean and quiet and the staff was fine. About 200 euros, but we used points. About a 5 minute walk from the Sheraton. Had breakfast at the airport. Went to Haarlem for dinner. Easy to get to. 20 euros for the train one way. Took Uber back to Hilton for about 30 euros.

Hi bill - that’s great to hear. I still have both reservations. So undecided! They are about same price for me now (though I have more points with Hilton).

Joy,
We stayed at the Hilton last year (we also stayed at the Citizen M which we didn’t love; staff great but room a bit too quirky for the 2 of us). The Hilton was fine except for my one complaint: I have never encountered such a slippery tile floor in a walk in shower plus there was nothing to hold on to. I ended up using the tub and handheld shower which was manageable but required care to not spray everywhere. They didn’t have bath mats. Next time I plan to try the Sheraton in the hopes it is better in that regard.

“Went to Haarlem for dinner. Easy to get to. 20 euros for the train one way.”

A one way train ticket from Schiphol to Haarlem should have cost you €8, not €20. From where did you buy your tickets?
BTW: the easiest way to get from Schiphol airport to Haarlem is the bus, not the train. The bus is direct, while the train requires a transfer. The bus is also a bit cheaper than the train; around €6 if you use your credit/debit card to tap in and out.
