Great restaurants in Amsterdam

We just spent a week in Amsterdam and Rick Steves' book on Amsterdam was invaluable. There are two restaurants I would encourage him to consider: Hap-hmm, which is a small famiy run restaurant that has won numerous awards, justifiably. It was extremely reasonable. It serves traditional Dutch food, comfort food. My friends thought it was the best meal we had in Amsterdam.

We went to the Seafood Bar, which Rick recommends. It was amazing. Equally amazing was another seafood restaurant, A Good Companion, where I had the most amazing sea bream ever. It was a whole fish and delectable. It cost 27 euros. It is in the Jordaan neighborhood.

I would also include The Pantry. We had a reservation for lunch. The restaurant was full on a Thursday at the end of April. It's traditional Dutch food, which I would say would have been really wonderful on a cold day. We had our reservation for a day that was warm and sunny. Yet still delicious!

KD, we also enjoyed dinner at The Pantry when we were in Amsterdam last year. It was packed for a weeknight dinner, so we were very glad we had made reservations. .

When in Amsterdam, we often eat at the Indonesian Ristoffels. Wonderful food and service--bunch of small dishes.

The city also has a number of Argentine steak houses that are excellent. They're also famous for their pancake houses.

We like to get cones of fried potatoes from street vendors.

Just got back from a 3 week trip that started in the Amsterdam. It rained evert day I was there which did make things less than wonderful, but I had some great meals while there. Klein Breda was a wonderful 5-course menu with 2 amuse bouche for $48 including a drink; MaX's was wonderful - rijsttafel with great flavors explained by Max for $58 including drink. Zolderings was recommended by my hotel - best asparagus I've ever had and wonderful fish fillet with lemon sauce and artichoke hearts and delicious french bread for $64 again with drink. John Dory another 5 course dinner - scallops, fish with potatoes and seaweed, mushroom soup, another fish with white asparagus, dessert of strawberries and cream for $99. This may be more information than most people want, but as you can see food is an important part of my travels. Sue

We have been in Amsterdam for two days now and have had two great dinners.

  1. Cafe Nieuw Amsterdam - simple food, well prepared, reasonable price and great atmosphere. We had the roast chicken for two (possible enough for a small family. Some of the best chicken I have ever had. Just west of central Amsterdam so easy to reach
  2. Hemelse Modder - listed on the travel forum on a new article and updated restaurant recommendations from Rick (late 2022) - one of the best meals I have ever had. A bit pricey - 160 Euros for a three course dinner for two with a bottle of wine. Not the usual tourist crowd - mostly locals, as it is about a ten to fifteen minute walk east of central Amsterdam (I count this as a plus). No a la carte service, just 3, 4 or 5 course prie fixe meals but boy are they worth it. Great service and atmosphere. Try it! 3
