Rent a car Dubrovnik or Montenegro

Does anyone have experience renting a car in Croatia and driving to Montenegro? Some travel books said a car rented in Croatia and driven in Montenegro maybe at risk for vandalism.

We did this as a day trip but were sorry we didn't use a local guide and van as I think it would have been more interesting. If you are game to skip the car rental, check out Dubrovnik Riviera Tours and get a quote for a private day trip. We used them for an all day tour of the Peljesac Peninsula wine region. Fabulous!

We rented a full size automatic in Dubrovnik through AutoEurope. Man, was I surprised when it turned out to be a Mercedes 300! I also read the Croatian plates could be an issue, but we did not encounter any in our week in Montenegro (we saw plenty of other Croatian plates).

Thanks for the information, we are looking forward to spending a week exploring Montenegro.

I think travel books tend to say pro forma stuff like this all the time ("maybe" at risk? doesn't say a heck of a lot about actual risk level) - the biggest risk comes from having visible stuff in your car, and you can control that aspect.

I had no trouble driving in Montenegro with my Croatian rental car.

I rented a car in Croatia and then spent two weeks in Montenegro. It was totally fine. Border crossings were very easy and we had no trouble with vandalism. Obviously we were sensible with where we parked etc. But it made life so much easier because we flew into Dubrovnik and so could rent straight from there.
