Montenegro 4 Weeks places to stay

Hi everyone! We are looking for your Montenegro travel advice.

Our family of four (two boys aged 12 and 10) is planning a four week Montenegro trip for end of April/May 2025 and renting a car.
To begin the trip we are staying just outside of Kotor for two weeks in Dobrota.

We are looking for advice on where to stay next that is not super touristy and more laid back. We enjoy learning about history, being outside, and trying new foods. We would love to hear ideas that you would recommend to stay next as a hub? (Cetinje, near Skadar National Park, Trivat?). Thank you!

I have only been to the Kotor-Budva area, but just wanted to suggest the Bradt Guide, which covers the country well. I would certainly head inland, to the mountains, as a contrast to your coastal time.

I don’t have a specific hub to recommend - for me, it would depend somewhat on what you find for lodging (probably similar to what you did in order to select Dobrota). But I second valadelphia’s recommendation to head inland for at least part of your remaining 2 weeks. Durmitor National Park is gorgeous, and could easily fill a week. As could the other side - maybe Kolasin. Podgorica isn’t terribly pretty, but I know a homestay a bit further out that makes a good base (since you will have a car) for seeing Skadar Lake and Petrovac (which I liked).
