Looking for Advice for independent travel from Dubrovnik to Montenegro

We are an active senior couple who will be finishing the Rick Steves’ Best of Adriatic tour, ending in Dubrovnik on May 11, 2026. We want to continue on our own to Montenegro. We have 4 days to travel to Montenegro and/or spend more time in Dubrovnik and area. We need to stay overnight in Dubrovnik on May 14, to fly out of Dubrovnik airport on May 15 to return home.
Has anyone planned a similar trip or have itinerary/hotel recommendations for Montenegro?
If you traveled there on your own, did you use a local travel agency for transportation or drive yourself?
So far, it seems the majority of Travel agencies go there on day trips only.
Do you have recommendations for a private driver, if we choose that route?
Thanks in advance!

We rented a car and it was very easy to get around. Loved the Bay of Kotor area and we appreciated the flexibility to get out of the car and explore when we wanted. We actually liked Kotor over Dubrovnik as we found there were a lot less tourists and it felt more relaxed.

Montenegro is beautiul. We took a one-day tour once, and on another visit took a bus to Budva for a few days and then on to Albania. It’s well worth a visit.

Since you’re flying home from the Dubrovnik airport, I’d recommend you spend that final evening (May 14) in the small scenic village of Cavtat, which is less than 5 minutes from the airport. You’ll drive right by Cavtat on your way to Dubrovnik (20 minutes?) then drive back the next day. Cavtat is one of our favorite places in Croatia and would be a lovely place to end your trip.

CharleneB has an excellent idea. That way you dont repeat, saves a little road time and puts you closer to your departure airport. Next time if anyone is thinking about doing this the airport at Podgorica is often overlooked and because it isnt in the EU and because Montenegro has a fraction of the tourists as Croatia (and Dubrovnik in particular) it can be a cheaper alternative.

Yes, the Bay of Kotor is beautiful but Boka Kotorska is more beautiful (LOL), but you need good advice, better than I can give, to get the most out of it. This isnt Western Europe where everything has been done a million time (each day). But thats the beauty of it. I try and go to Montenegro every year and I am still learning so much I hesitate to get to specific. You get to be a tad more local and enjoy the holiday the way we all use to before the tourism boom. One key on that. If you hit the town of Kotor when a crusise ship is there, it can be another Dubronik. So do check the cruise ship schedules. If you need to know how, ask.

You have enough time to hit at least one stop beyond the Bay of Kotor and there are several great choices. Make the best of it. You will remember it.

Safe travels.
