Lake Shkodra: kayaking and pelicans

This large lake has rare and endangered pelican population as part of its appeal, and other birds to watch. Any advice on the most rewarding areas to set off to quietly paddle in a kayak observe wildlife? IS it possible to see pelicans in May (and with what boat operator who might give insightful commentary on its group trips?).

I imagine going into smaller areas with reeds, versus the big wide open water is where it's most rewarding. Someone once recommended Rijeka Crnojevica, in the far off northwest, creeklike area, but though the kayaking may be good, the town itself doesn't look as appealing as other lake areas.

Thanks in advance for any commentary on your time at this lake, where you based yourself. Our trip is soon: May 14!

I just did a regular boat on the lake so can’t help. But it is an easy ask, if you end up using Dijana. I was based in Podgorica and rode from Virpazar. I was on a Monte Frog boat (in September) - and I see they offer kayaks for rent. https://montefrog.com/services/

An update: we learned from Virpazar kayak/boat company that they do not do pelican viewing tours because the pelicans gather more on the Albanian side. I can imagine that even if boats/kayakers stay at a respectful distance, the pelicans don't agree that the distance is safe and respectful.
