We will be stopping in Kotor for a day on our cruise in September. I see the cable car as part of some of the shore excursions.
1 - how far is the cable car from the cruise port?
2 - Are rides on it first come/first serve or are tickets needed in advance?
Trying to just explore on our own as opposed to cruise excursions….

I don't remember a cable car in Kotor. (I googled and it wasn't there yet when I was there! No wonder I don't remember it.) You can easily climb up the stairs at the back of the town without taking a shore excursion as long as you are in Kotor. If you want the cable car, you can find a website that shows on a map the upper and lower stations, ticket prices etc...
There is also definitely a cable car in Dubrovnik and once you are in Dubrovnik you can walk to get on that one, but if it were me, i'd rather spend my time walking the city walls and around town.
