Just wanted to let folks know that the ZTL for Florence has been expanded to the entire historic district. This is in effect from April until the end of October. A good place to get info is the City of Florence web site. It has a good map of the entire new ZTL. This poses a problem for us since we have to drop off a car at the Avis rental place in early May that is now in the ZTL. Any tips re how to deal with this? We are contacting the rental company.

Looks like you did the correct thing to contact the rental company. They'd probably be able to advise you best.

There is no change. The ZTL was extended to the entire Centro Storico in 2011. What happens in April is that the nocturnal ZTL kicks in.
To go to AVIS in via borgo ognissanti, which has been in the ZTL for a while, simply come from via di San frediano then turn left toward the ponte Vespucci. Cross it then turn left on borgognissanti. Avis is on the right just before via curtatone.
