Any suggestions on what not too miss besides the Matterhorn
Hi Becky...I love Switzerland. The trains/transport system, culture and people are great. Zermatt for two days is nice if you are doing the tourist thing (and not skiiing). This way, you can take your time and relax. Plus, you have a better chance of seeing the mountain if you give yourself two days because if there is any fog one day, maybe you will not have that fog the next day.
Maybe you already know about this link but it has some interesting ways to see the Matterhorn and Gornergrat. They have some sunrise and dinner experiences. My biggest regret when I went to Zermatt was that I only spent one night. I think more than two nights is too much unless you are doing winter sports. It can be fun and lively at night.
If you are in good shape you can hike part way up the Matterhorn to Hornli Hut. It's a 675 meter ascent from Schwarzsee, reached by gondola, on a good trail, not technical, no rock climbing, great views. Allow most of a day for this great hike. Here's a link http://www.ski-zermatt.com/mattnet/features/walking_guide/hornli_hut.html
There are other great hikes all around Zermatt.

You'll likely get more responses if you post this in Switzerland rather than Italy. Good luck.
