I've found the HI Hostels are usually well run and the facilities are consistent between locations. Many provide a breakfast as well.
If your daughter is planning to use these in any locations in her travels, it would probably be worthwhile to buy a Membership. It's not expensive and provides slightly better rates, and members also get preferential treatment for reservations. The information should be on their web site.

You might have a look at www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Milano--Milan----Piero-Rotta-031076.en.htm or www.hostelworld.com. You could also check the Italy Guidebook, as you may be able to find a budget Hotel in about the same price range.
