Hi,
After we saw the Colosseum in the morning, we went to Il Bocconcino for lunch. We very much enjoyed it. It was within walking distance from the Colosseum but still far enough away that it wasn't a tourist trap. The problem with sitting down at a restaurant too close to a big attraction is that it's a tourist trap restaurant and likely doesn't have great food. (We learned that the hard way with lunch near the Vatican!)

Here is my Yelp review:

I got the impression that the majority of restaurants around the Colosseum/Forums were tourist-oriented places - high prices and mediocre food. If you have a smartphone or tablet, there is an app available named "Eat Italy" which has restaurant guides/reviews that cover several major cities. The individual city guides coast a couple dollars each but I found them to be very helpful and spot-on. I would definitely recommend them.

We always ask our local guides for recommendations after the tour is finished. Usually it is a little walk away from the touristy area but reasonable with great food. After our Vatican tour our guide gave us a wonderful, off the beaten path, recommendation.

We've been to Gallo Matto three times, it's about a 10 minute walk from the Colosseum. The house wine was awful, the simple food we ordered was good and reasonably priced, the busy decor right up my street.
