Your Hotel Suggestion for Rome

Our one and only trip to Rome was in 2005, and we stayed at the Hotel San Francesco in the Trastevere. This was a great hotel, but for our next trip - in the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022 - I would like to stay in a different part of Rome. On this trip, I really want to see the Ara Pacis Augustae, Domus Aurea, and the Villa Borghese. We covered Rome's "must sees" on our 2005 trip.

The plan is to fly in and out of Rome, and spend most of our time on the Amalfi Coast.

If you have stayed in a hotel in Rome in the last 5 years that you would recommend, please tell me about it.

Thanks!

If you are just transiting through Rome, then I would stay in the Termini area for convenience to transportation. Now we always stay in the Termini area because it is comfortable from repeat trips and like the transportation hub. We have used Hotel Aberdeen, Sonya, and Atillia. My wife prefers the Sonya, across from Opera House, because she thinks their lattes are better than the Aberdeen. If they are it is a small difference. Sonya is a little closer to Termini than Aberdeen but both equally good. Nice restaurants around both locations.

We stayed at the hotel Regno. It is on the Via del Corso, centrally located between the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Down the street is the Wedding Cake”. We walked every where. The hotel was wonderful, rooms nice size, great breakfast, helpful friendly staff.

Our RS tour a couple of years ago stayed at the Hotel San Carlo, a short walk from the Ara Pacis and the Spanish Steps, a longer walk from the Villa Borghese. Next to the Spanish Steps is a Metro station three stops from Termini. As I recall, the station also has an elevator up to the Borghese Gardens, making the walk to the Villa that much easier. The hotel was fine, with a nice rooftop terrace bar, helpful staff and lots of restaurants nearby. My single room was small, I think most of them are. You might not want to share the place with an RS tour group, but those tours may not have resumed when you go, and they may not use the hotel that often.

The Ara Pacis isn't considered one of the "first tier" sights in Rome, but I thought it was wonderful -- well presented and uncrowded. Definitely worthwhile on a second visit or a longer first visit.

We’ve stayed in the Termini on two occasions. As suggested up thread it’s convenient to transportation. We stayed at Residenza Cellini. It is near the Aberdeen & Sonya Hotels. ResidenzaCellini.it. We were supposed return to Rome for a couple nights in Sept. We decided we wanted to be closer to the Pantheon area and booked at Hotel Due Torri. It was recommended by many Forum contributors. They have a sister hotel closer to the Borghese. It’s called Hotel Fontella Borghese. This hotel was also recommended.

While I can't recommend a specific hotel firsthand, I'd look at those recommended by Frank and Janis or in that general area. We have stayed a block or two southwest of the Aberdeen and Cellini (our hotel is now a performance/event center) and found that area to be convenient to Termini (although not right AT the train station) and enjoyable walks to any number of attractions...although I'll admit that we're big walkers and cover more ground on foot than some folks prefer to. :O)

Domus Aurea and Villa Borghese are quite some distance apart but hotels around the Repubblica area will place you approx. midway between them.

Check out Hotel Fontanella Borghese as the location is great. You can walk to The Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican City. We've stayed there several times and have always been pleased. It's very nice, but not over the top. In addition, the Hotel Du Tori was at one time was operated by the same nice folks and may still be run by them.

I can recommend Albergo del Senato which is adjacent to the Pantheon. In fact, our room was on a top floor and had a direct view. The rooftop patio is a great place to relax after a long day of sightseeing. We stayed in 2019 with friends and family and it was their favorite hotel for the entire trip to Italy. In addition to fabulous views, the location is a reasonable walk to Trastevere. The thing I was really impressed with was the service. We ran into a very last minute airline delay of 12 hours and I was able to rearrange our air travel on the fly to catch an earlier flight. We had less than 2 hours to check-out and get to the airport. The hotel staff got us transportation early in the morning for 6 people and luggage, expedited our checkout, and made sure we had a coffee to go. I would stay there again in a minute.

We love the Aberdeen, which we have stayed at three times, once on a RS tour, twice on our own. The last time we were in Rome on a RS tour we stayed at the nearby Sonya, which is also fine. Both are near Termini; the Aberdeen is closer to the station, an easy walk. The Aberdeen is on a quiet street, but the Sonya has more nearby restaurant choices. The breakfast was good at both hotels. I must say (again) I still crave the mortadella that was served in the Sonya's breakfast buffet.

In 2018 we stayed at the Hotel Victoria Roma, across the street from Villa Borghese's park. Our Superior Double incl. breakfast was 170 Euros (right off the planes from Calif. we weren't messing' around). Nice hotel, obviously great location for the Villa. Street address is via Campania, on the park's south side. Perk was the room's view of the major Aurelian brick wall & gateway with huge bust of Alexander the Great (receptionist said), & the park's tall umbrella trees beyond, the quintessential pines of Rome :)

Don't mean to be picky but Sonya is a couple blocks closer to Termini than Aberdeen. Aberdeen is on the other side of via Nazaionale. Check the map. Sonya is just SW of the National Museum of Rome that sits on the SW corner of Piazza del Cinquecento in front of Termini. Right across from the Opera House. Hard to miss.

We stayed at the Rome Marriott Hotel Flora. It’s located right next to the Borghese Villa. They have a stunning roof top where breakfast is served and you can see all of Rome while you drink your morning cappuccino. It’s also pretty convenient to walk to everything, including Harry’s Bar right across the street (provided it’s still in business).

Thanks for the correction, Frank. For some reason in my mind's eye the Sonya is further south than the Aberdeen is. They're both convenient to Termini, and I would stay at either one again.

Stayed at the Albergo del Senato in Sept 2019 at the end of a long diy tour. Agree with the comments of SandyO above. Our smallish but well appointed room looked directly onto the Pantheon and courtyard below. I could open the window and enjoyed taking it all in. The rooftop lounge was delightful at sunset. Breakfast was good and they will fry eggs upon request. But it may not best fit your location preferences. Have found that using the map view on booking.com or similar sites helps me select the accommodations that best fit our touring objectives.

We stayed at Hotel Regno in May of 2019 for four nights. Once we got there, it was very centrally located. The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and more were close. We went to an evening opera performance at a church just around the corner. The bus connections were good but it was very walkable. Lovely hotel, nice breakfast, friendly staff and our room was ready when we got there about 9 am. On the flip side, the ventilation in our room, which faced Via del Corso, wasn't efficient and there was a lot of street noise. However, we did like being part of the bustle of the city and we choose to sleep with the window open. I'd recommend it.

We stayed at IQ hotel rome. It was superb hotel, walking distance from the station, only problem is that it is a little far away from all the major sites, so we just used to cab it up to the colosseum , pantheon, vatican etc.

Thanks to all the posters that provided the great hotels. I checked them all and found some great ones for about $350 per night. Sorry, but the one by the Spanish Steps at 600 Euros per night is out of our range. We like the Pantheon region.

Here I am, planning a future trip to Italy when I am not yet ready to plan a trip to my hairdresser.
