Your favorite mountain villages in Abruzzo?

We will be traveling from Vieste/east coast to Rome in early June, and are considering staying for a few nights in the mountains of Abruzzo on our way. What do you suggest? I am seeing Sulmona (which might be a bigger town that we're looking for), Opi, Pescocostanzo, Navelli...any ideas, experiences to share? We have two kids, and would be seeking scenery, low tourism, the potential for a few hours of nice hiking...

We could also just drive straight through, and stay on the east coast for another night - if Abruzzo is not worth the stop.

Thanks so much!!

It is lovely to stop in Abruzzo and experience the more rural culture. One night at Santo Stefano in the Albergo DIffuso. Add the PicNic service and take it away with you the next day. Tour on your way to Castelli, a tiny little town with a focus on ceramics. You can see Castel del Monte, a medieval castle, the National Park and beautiful mountains. Stay a couple of nights if you can in Castelli for a great small town experience.

We stayed at wonderful Agriturismo Il Portone in Abbateggio for three days this past April. You can view it on Expedia and it is exactly as shown in the pictures and very reasonably priced. The meals are excellent and you will have plenty of room to hike and explore. It's very near a national park/reserve and in a beautiful area.

Sulmona is lovely and still has a small-town feel. If you are driving and have time, have a look at the Gran Sasso (Big Rock), the highest point in the Appenine mountains.
