Wrong Trenitalia Ticket

I bought a Trenitalia ticket for my family and I and I realized later my daughter is too old for the child-fare I bought. It's a super-economy fare, so there is no way I can modify online, or at all. Can I just pay the difference in fare and the fine on board the train to the conductor? I suspect I can and will bring a wad of cash to do so. I'm going in July, so if you can help, please help get some peace of mind. Thanks! Grazie tante!

Could you just buy another ticket for her now and avoid the worries?

I thought about that, but there's no guarantee she'd be in the same car as her mother and I, much less the same seat set. I'm pretty sure I can just pay the difference in fares and a small fine. People get found in the wrong car and class on Trenitalia trains all the time and the conductors just charge them the difference and a fee. I just wanted to know if anyone on Rick's forums has ever done the same thing. Thanks for replying.

I would buy another ticket for her now, show the conductor both tickets to show that she had a seat but with the wrong type of ticket.

Someone else may have an easier solution;. Roberto?

But you wouldn't have to worry about the fine, which might not be so small.

I have tried to find your case in the Trenitalia "Condizioni generali di trasporto", a long document whose language is occasionally hard to understand also to Italian mother language speakers. As far as I understand, this is a case of irregular ticket, that can be regularized by paying the difference to the full fare plus a fine that - if I understand correctly - should be eur 10 if paid on board.

If you prefer to buy a new ticket, it is possible to check "choose a seat" on the Trenitalia website, and you will be given some latitude - sometimes you may choose which car and place, sometimes only the place but not the car.

I would buy another ticket now. When the conductor comes show him both tickets. You've already paid for the seat for your daughter so she can use that even with the new ticket. You may still be able to get the super economy fare if you purchase quickly.

Buy the correct ticket for her Now! Never go on a train in Italy with the Wrong ticket, with No ticket, or with a Non-validated ticket where that is required.

The conductors are Not equipped to sell, collect differences in fare, or validate tickets on board. And I've Never seen a passenger pay a fine on board; it's done off the train and will derail your trip! The Fine you talk about is Large, and the conductor's Fury has No bounds. I've seen conductors throw Locals off the train when found with No ticket. I nearly got Jailed when found with an Non-validated ticket.

Often there are 3 different conductors who come by and check your ticket; 1 of them will be sure to get you.

There is another option you can do before boarding -- if you're boarding at a staffed station, get there ahead of time and stand in line at the Customer Service area and have the live agent help you obtain the correct ticket for your daughter. At Rome Termini, it's at least a one hour wait in line to see a customer service rep; get your number from the dispensers in the area. At Florence SMN, the wait is shorter.

I've done this to correct a wrong ticket and it's worked fine. I've had to endure smirking from the live agent, but they do their job! I'm just trying to help you board with Everything a Go! It's Not worth the risk boarding with a wrong ticket.

Well, on this trip to Italy I saw three people near us fined for not validating regionale tickets (fare paid was €7; fine, collected on the spot in cash or by credit card, was €20) No hassle, no threats but no forgiveness either.

Regionale train references above do not apply here.

I have limited freccia train experience but only half the time for us were tickets even checked. You don't say what the age mistake was but it is probably unlikely to be challenged unless you are many years wrong.

The problem with paying the difference on the train is there may be no super economy fares left to pay the difference on so you just get a small credit (what you paid) on the full fare.

Regional trains don't have seat reservations and those tickets can be used on any train taking that route, which is why they need to be validated as they could be used over and over again. High speed trains have seat assignments and your tickets are only valid for the date and train bought for. You cannot use them on another train, which is why they don't need to be validated.

I agree with Sandra and others that you should have the correct ticket when boarding. However, a few times I have forgotten to validate a ticket and the conductor validated it on board - but I went to look for him before he came to check my ticket.

Regionale tickets now are only good for a specific date of travel.
