Wrong station reservations

So I wasn't paying enough attention and booked reservations from Verona to Venezia Mestre station and then reservations from Venezia S Lucia to Rome. There is about a half hour window between the arrival of my first train and the departure of my second. Is it possible to take a taxi that fast between the two stations? Or can I catch a quick train? How far apart are they? I have to make the connection or I will lose my booking in Rome and have already paid for all the reservations and deposits on the rooms. I am freaking out a little. Can anyone help me?

What kind of tickets did you buy? And how did you buy them? You may be able to get a refund on your current ticket and buy another one now which takes you from Verona to Venice Santa Lucia, or get it changed when you get on in Verona. Does the train from Verona to Mestre continue on to Santa Lucia? You can check that on the Trenitalia website. There is also an online refund service available on the website. I think if you bought the higher-cost Flessibile ticket, you can get a full refund at any station or the travel agency where you bought it up to departure time. After departure, up to 24 hours later, you can get a refund minus 50%. As I read the site, if this is a Base ticket, which generally would be interpreted as full price, before departure you can ask at any station, or the travel agency where it was purchased, and get a refund minus 20%; after departure, only up to an hour later, you need to ask either at the departure station, or the place where you bought it, as long as it isn't the arrival station, and get a refund minus 50%. Again, if you bought it on the Trenitalia website, check back there to see if you can just get a refund or change the ticket.

You're going to have to check the train routes on trenitalia website to see if your outbound train from S.L. stops at Mestre (best situation) or if your inbound train to Mestre continues on to S.L. (not the best since any transfer at S.L. would be significantly less than your original 30 minutes. Any chance that both trains stop at a common station a little further out from Venezia, say Padova? If so, get off at Padova and make the transfer there (you'll have lots of time to spare in this case).

Thank you all for your input. I looked at the reservations and they are 80% refundable up to three days before departure. I also looked at the website and my train will continue on to S Lucia so I think all I have to do is buy the extra reservation for that short part of my trip and should just land right where I need to be with enough time to make my connection. Thank you all for your help!

Are going from Verona to Rome via Venice? Why not just take the direct train from Verona to Rome?

More than likely, your Venezia SL to Rome train's first stop is Mestre. If so, just get on that train in Mestre. It's not like flying; you will not get penalized for getting on a stop later. If someone is sitting on your reserved seat, just show them your reservation and kindly ask them to vacate. Going all the way to Venice SL to catch your Rome train shouldn't be an issue either under normal circumstances except if your arriving train gets held up and your Rome train leaves before you can board.

Yes - agree with the last poster - just get off at Mestre and catch the Rome train from Mestre too as it is likely to stop there right after Santa Lucia.

Michelle, if you'll let us know exactly which date and what time your trains are, we can answer you decisively. Train numbers (to be absolutely sure) would be a bonus... I agree that you'll probably be able to just wait the 30 minutes at Mestre for the train to come back by...BUT, I've seen the occasional train that doesn't stop there, so don't assume anything!
