Would you still go to Gubbio knowing that...

the church bells chime every 15 minutes even throughout the night? I am thinking of adding Gubbio to our itinerary for 2 nights in the middle of a 3-week trip to Italy in March of 2012. We would be travelling from Orvieto by car. I have read several reviews that complain about the night noise from the chimes. Has anyone been here and can say that the sights and charm of Gubbio more than make up for a couple of potentially poor sleeps? I would really love to visit, but this light sleeper appreciates a good night's sleep as well!

James- if you are traveling by car Gubbio can easily be see as a day trip. We visited Gubbio as day trip while staying in Assisi which I highly recommend for at least two nights...we stayed for 3 and found it magical. Gubbio is charming but preferred Assisi. In Assisi we stayed at La Pallota and also ate at their restaurant twice...they are listed in Rick's book. Stefano and his family were welcoming, gracious and highly accommodating.

I think Gubbio is a great stop and well worth an overnight stay. I myself am a pretty heavy sleeper though, but you can always bring earplugs...

I would easily pick Assisi over Gubbio. Here are some of the reasons: Assisi photos from 2008

I have not been so I cannot comment on it but why not look for accommodation with double-paned or soundproofed windows and take some earplugs? I don't travel without them. The glazed windows really work. my B&B in Rome was right on a huge major street and with the windows closed i didnt even hear a siren.

I never stayed overnight in Gubbio, but I would have loved to. It's a bit off the beaten path in Umbria, so it would definitely be more convenient to stay there than to make it a day trip. We went there on a day trip from Perugia and wished we had more time there. I remember liking it enough that as soon as we got back to our hotel in Perugia, I made reservations to return during the Race of the Ceri. Unfortunately, work intervened and I had to cancel those reservations, but I would have gladly suffered through the church bells to spend more time in Gubbio. FWIW, I've also visited Assisi (on a day trip from Spoleto), and vastly preferred Gubbio. Maybe you can stay somewhere far enough away from the church where the noise won't bother you as much.

Thank you for all the replies! I occasionally use earplugs but my wife does not. It seems like a cool place to visit even for a daytrip, but I can see we have some thinking to do about this and enquiring of the different accommodations in Gubbio concerning night noise and windows, etc. to make it work as an overnight stop on our trip.
