Coming from Munich and ultimately traveling to Venice - which is the most "should not miss spot" - Salzburg or Lago Di Braies?
Myself and my adult children (19,21,25)
Would you rather see more cities or lakes? Sound of Music fans? Are you traveling by car or train?
Personally I would choose a lake in the Dolomites. But I see Lago di Braies is now mentioned as one of those spots favored for that " perfect Instagram photo", which bothers me a bit. I do not like to see a place in nature promoted just for Instagram selfies.
What do you like, natural beauty or historical and beautiful cities? That's the choice, of those two I would do Salzburg first, then if time the lake, or the lake on another trip, but that is just me. I haven't been to Lago Di. Braies but I have been to Salzburg.
Thank you both for your advice!
I would consider Salzburg. At Braies there is nothing but the lake and the hike around it can be completed in an hour and half. The trail is easy and wide on one side but the other side can easily get muddy if it has recently rained - and if you happen to be there on a rainy day there is almost nothing to do.
I feel that mountain destinations deserve more time than usually allotted. Cities offer more choices if you have a limited amount of time.
mrjag,
I'd suggest Salzburg as there's far more to see in that area. While there you could also take a day trip to Hallstatt, which is one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Europe. That would provide you with the city and the lake experience with one destination.
Hallstatt has one of the oldest Salt Mines in Europe (older than Rome as I recall) and the tour of the mine is interesting (especially sliding down the long wooden railings).
You might consider spending at least one night in Hallstatt so that you can enjoy it in the evening.
From Salzburg you could also plan a day trip to Berchtesgaden and visit the famous Eagle's Nest.
