Would love to have input for my itinerary...

We will be travleing in early June and this is what I have come up with. We cannot change our days in each location as hotels and trains are set. I am mostly looking for ideas and feedback for what we have planned each day. I've listed prebooked tours. We are a family of 2 adults, 16yo, and 13yo boys. We love science probably more than art, hence the Galileo Museum in Florence!

Day 1: Arrive Rome 9:00am. Check into apartment. Jet lagged walking tour using Rick Steve's Heart of Rome Walk; also maybe do the Rick Steve's Rome-Trastevere walking tour in the evening and grab dinner there since it is close to where we are staying.

Day 2: Rome. 8:30am Walks of Italy tour of the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill (3 hour tour);
We also have tickets from 5-7 at the Borghese.

Day 3: Rome. 7:15 Walks of Italy Pristine Sistine Chapel Tour (3 hour tour)
Was thinking of possibly taking a taxi (after taking a nice long break) to the Appia Antica Cafe near the Appian Way to see the ancient road and possibly visit one of the catacombs nearby (they close at 5).

Day 4: Rome to Florence. Arrive in Florence at 11:30. Lunch. Visit the cathedral, baptistry, bell tower, and museum (?). Tickets to climb the dome at 4:00pm. Cross the Ponte Vecchio (open 3:30-7:30) Dinner. Watch the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo (can do this another evening instead).

Day 5: Florence. Accademia Tickets 9:30 (1hr), walk to San Lorenzo Market (1-1.5hr), Lunch, Palazzo Vecchio to climb tower (1hr), Galileo Museum (1-1.5hrs.), Uffizi tickets 16:00.

Day 6: Florence. Private Gelato Tour and Bike tour of Tuscany (8 hours)

Day 7: Florence. Day trip to Lucca and Pisa via train

Day 8: Florence to Venice. Arrive Venice at 10:30. Wander/Get Lost. Visit San Giorgio Tower. Take the vaporetto #1 ride down the Grand Canal around sunset.

Day 9: Venice: St. Mark's Campanile when it opens at 8:30, St. Mark's timed entrance at 9:45, Doges Palace Secret Itenerary Tour 11:35. Gondola Ride.

Day 10: Depart Venice via Water Taxi to Marco Polo Airport

That's pretty busy but I'm guessing you're all up to it. You're not seeing "everything" but you wouldn't have time. You are seeing some of the best there is to see in your cities, and you have some breaks you could fill with other sights or (perhaps more likely) slow down. Others may recommend more that you "must see," but be careful not to over-schedule yourselves.

On Day 4, you may not be able to get in and out of the Duomo, Baptistery, Bell Tower, and museum between lunch and when they close. You have tickets to "climb the dome" -- I think more likely that's the Bell Tower. If you have to prioritize among the others, I'd put the Baptistery first, museum second, and Duomo interior last.

I think Day 5 is overkill -- you'll be dragging through the Uffizi. Maybe you can put off one of these museums till Day 7.

On Day 8, good idea to get to San Giorgio on the first day.

Maybe we take out Palazzo Vecchio tower climb for another day or skip it on Day 5. I think we'd rather see the Galileo Museum over another historical building anyway. The timed entrance on Day 4 is not the bell tower, but to climb the dome. I checked the hours for the Duomo on our day and the earliest closing time is the Cathedral and Crypt at 16:30, then the Dome at 17:00, and everything else is open until 19:00 or later. I can't imagine our family spending more than 3 hours there. Thank you for your advice! I am trying to see as much as we can but don't want to try to do too much.

Day 4. The cathedral interior isn't that great, if there's a line - skip it. The baptistry has a mosaic domed ceiling well worth seeing, and don't forget to look at the doors from the outside (any time).

Day 5 - you never know how much time you'll want in a market. This day sounds crammed. I think you are right to consider skipping the tower climb.

Day 7 - I'd start with Pisa. If you want to climb the leaning tower, buy tickets in advance. The church and baptistry are lovely. Then you'll not be rushed in Lucca.

Day 8 - one of the best views of Venice is on the vaporetto from San Giorgio approaching San Marco.

Day 9 - The Doge's tour goes to parts of the building that are very hot. If you haven't booked yet, get the earliest tour. You may be interested in the Clock Tower tour. Instead of a gondola ride, take a rowing lesson.

Following the routes marked out in the Michelin Green Guide, it took us 9 hours to do Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill.
Rome: to see at night: 1] Trevi Fountain, 2] Colosseum 3] Victor Emanual Monument

Gondola Ride: don't repeat Grand Canal. Go to the gondola stand between the Doges Palace & the church where Vivaldi worked & see one of the real, small neighborhood canals

Hi are you taking the breakfast option with pristine sistine walks of italy tour?

I had not seen the breakfast option when I booked my tour back in February. Thank you for letting me know, I am going to see about changing ours to the one with breakfast. Food plus a later arrival, that is great!

Florence, Day 4: I would keep Piazzale Michelangelo and add San Miniato al Monte while you're up there. The church sits above the piazza. It's very old and important, has an interesting cemetery, and is free for a look-see besides. Try to get there during visiting hours, although their Latin masses in Gregorian chant are reported to be beautiful.

Oh, and you wrote "Cross the Ponte Vecchio (open 3:30-7:30)"? The bridge itself has no open/closed hours, and IMHO there's no reason to visit the jewelry shops (which do have hours).

As you'll be pressed for time at the duomo complex, skip climbing the campanile as you already have dome reservations. I'll agree with Chani that the interior of the church is one of the less visually impressive I've seen in Italy so I wouldn't spend a lot of time there either.

Florence, Day 5: That one is overpacked. Yes, I would absolutely ship Palazzo Vecchio as, what with the dome and Piazzale Michelangelo, you don't really need another bird's-eye view.

Thank you for all of the advice. I've taken Palazzo Vecchio off of Day 5 in Florence, and changed my Walks of Italy Vatican tour to the one with breakfast, and added a sunset gondola lesson instead of ride in Venice. My boys will love that! I am so glad I posted my trip to the forum. What great ideas that I would have missed!

We did a gondola lesson around 3 or 4pm on our arrival day into Venice and it was great! I bet you will enjoy it :)
