Would love some idea and thoughts about a 2 week visit in March

We are flying into Rome March 18th and heading to Salerno for two nights staying at a B&B. We are thinking of seeing Salerno, Paestrum and Vietri Sul Mare.

Friday and Saturday we are wide open to ideas, would like to see Pompei - and stay somewhere around the Amalfi Coast.

Sunday we head to Rome and are staying at the Cavalieri where we will meet our friends who are doing the Marathon.

Monday through Friday we will be in Florence staying at a flat right in the heart of everything. Would love ideas for what to see and do. We are hiring a driver to take us from Rome to Florence so we can stop along the way and see some of Tuscany. And we know we want to see the sights by foot in Florence. The rest is open to ideas.

Friday - Tuesday are wide open to any ideas. We fly out of Rome on Tuesday the 31st. Thanks everyone for and thoughts and ideas. This is our first visit to Italy!!!

Lydia,

How many nights will you be on the ground?

I count 13 nights if you will be arriving on the 18th & departing on the 31st.

Do you realize that 2 nights in Salerno equals to 1 full day there?

I'd suggest at least 3 full days (4 nights) in Florence and 3-4 full days in Rome (4-5 nights)

So that leaves you with 4-5 nights in Salerno, Sorrento, AC.

A private driver to drive you from Rome to Florence? Sounds expensive! But if you can afford it, good for you!!!

What to see & do in Florence? Check a guidebook and this will give you tons of ideas.

We land on Wednesday the 18th and are booked for the 18th and 19th at a B&B in Salerno. Then we have 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) wide open.

Sunday the 22nd we meet up with friend who are running the marathon in Rome so that is how we are hiring a driver - there will be 8 of us so it is a reasonable way to get from Rome to Florence and see some stuff along the way. We are at an apartment in Florence with our friend Monday until Friday morning.

Friday until we fly out on Tuesday are open for just my husband and I don't know if we want to spend a lot of time in Rome. I think if we had one full day we would be happy, maybe 2. Wondering if we should do Cinque Terre but some people said no since we did Amalfi so thought maybe Venice? Or are we cramming too much into Friday-Tues?

Thanks for your quick reply and feedback.

If you are looking for another Hilton property, there is a nice one in Sorrento. I stayed there on points a few years ago and highly recommend it, especially if you can get access to the Executive lounge. The lounge is on the roof with a nice breakfast and wine/beer/soft drinks available all day. Great view of the town, Bay of Naples, Vesuvius and Naples. It's an easy 30 minute train ride to Pompeii from there.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Hilton. We are Airbnb Hosts so we are trying to stay in B&B most nights. But that sounds lovely.

Have you been to Rome in the past?

I'd not recommend going to the CT in March as the weather is very iffy.

You could day trip to Lucca & Pisa from Florence before heading back to Rome.

Will you be visiting Orvieto with the private driver?

You could travel to Ostia Antica from Rome.

I've not traveled to the Amalfi Coast so I will let others chime in.

So you technically have 1 full day and a half in Salerno....

You could definitely do Paestum and Vietri if you hoof it at the earliest train there and back, you can spend the early evening in Vietri (I Due Fratelli restaurant is AMAZING, famous pizza, but very infrequent buses late into the evening) and then back to Salerno for the night....

You could possibly do a trip to one of the Amalfi/Positano destinations, for the next day, and then to visit Pompeii, and to stay on the Amalfi Coast, will be very difficult....if you wanted to stay on the Sorrento Coast, and then take the circumvesuviana to the ruins, Sorrento would be great for that.....so even....maybe the south side of the coast for 2 nights, and then I would train to Pompeii, store the luggage and then tour the site, take the cirvumvesuviana to Sorrento, enjoy the city or take a ferry to Capri...

sorry this is long and involved....

but thinking about it....you're there Wednesday-Sunday.....meaning that Thursday/Friday/Saturday are free.....so I would say Paestum/Vietri on Thursday, a train to Pompeii and store luggage on Friday on the way to Sorrento, and then Sorrento exploration or Capri on Saturday....and out on Sunday....

that is a great idea to do the train to Pompei and then to Sorrento. Thanks for all the great suggestions.
