Worth the money?

I have not booked any destination reservations. Is Viator's "skip-the-line tour" of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica worth the money? I don't want to waste our time in Rome with lines. Is this the best company to use for tours? Or is there a better company to buy tickets with? Thank you!

Yes, it is worth the money to skip the line, even if you just buy from teh Vatican Museum site for a timed entry. IMHO a tour is worthwhile, though, and I like Walks of Italy's Pristine Sistine Tour because you get to the chapel before the crowds.,

FYI, Viator is not a tour company. They sell tours conducted by other companies. So I would suggest you take a look at the actual companies offering the tours.

I really like Context Rome because they limit groups to six and the guides are incredibly well educated. I did a Vatican tour with a guide who teaches Baroque art history at Rome programs run by American universities and is also a practicing Catholic. Laurel mentions a good option in her response.

However you do it, it's HIGHLY advised that you either pre-purchase tickets to the Vatican Museums or book a tour.

Besides the suggestions above, you may book tours on the Vatican's own website. FYI: the Sistine is IN the museums so tours of the museum will include the chapel. Guides are not allowed to provide narration in the chapel due to the requirement for silence so you'll be 'touring' that section on your own.

Do also note the dress code for the museums and basilica: no bare knees or shoulders. This applies to both men and women, and is the standard rule for all Italian churches.
