Worth going to Almalfi Coast for an overnighter?

Hi, we're at a convention in Rome but have 2 full days one night. Was thinking of doing road terip by car or public transportation from Rome down the Almalfi coast. We have never been south of Rome, but have seen Rome alot. Is it doable for that length of time? should we do car? We love to have that convenience. Also where should we go and where to stay?
Thanks so much

What month is your visit? During July and August it is a nightmare trying to park anywhere on the coast. If you do have two full days, it is worth an overnight. Better if you could do two nights though.

Yes, it's worth it IMHO. From Rome to Amalfi will take about 3.5hrs.-4.0hrs of travel time on public transportation. Deduct about 45 minutes if you are going no farther than Sorrento. On public transportation, it's the Trenitalia train from Rome to Naples, the private Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento and finally, the SITA bus from Sorrento down the Amalfi coast to Amalfi. Of course the bus stops at other great places along the way.

One option upon arrival in Naples is to travel a short distance to the ferry terminal and take the ferry to Sorrento or other places along the Amalfi coast. A caution in the winter months is that the ferry schedules are reduced.

Hi thanks for the comments. To drive we could rent car for $170 not including gas for 4 people. Or is it alot cheaper to use public transportation? Also it will be Aug 10. any more ideas?
We are used to driving in Europe and Italy.
Thanks,
