World War II - Italy - Monte Casino / Anzio

My father and my wife's father were both in Italy during World War II. As we prepared to travel to Italy last summer we wanted to spend a bit of time retracing their route and perhaps seeing some of the same things that they encountered. We hired the services of Dr. Danila Bracaglia who is the sole proprietor of Monte Casino / Anzio Battlefield tours. It was the highlight of our trip! We had given her information in advance concerning what units our dads were with. My father had been an aerial observer during the war. He flew in the back of a very small plane, observed enemy locations, dodged bullets, and radioed the info to the command post. Dr. Bracaglia was able to walk us to the location that had been the airstrip that my dad used during the war. Today it is a beautiful wheat field. It was incredible to stand their and imagine the planes flying in and out. We also toured the village of San Pietro which was never rebuild after the war. In my wife's dad's diary he noted being at San Pietro on January 1, 1944. For those of us who grew up with fathers who had fought in World War II, it was so rewarding to see first hand the difficulties that they faced and to literally be able to retrace their steps. At the end of the day we toured the beautiful Monte Casino Abbey which was destroyed during the war but has now been rebuilt.
Our time spent with Dr. Bracaglia was incredible! If you had a father, grandfather, uncle or other loved one who was in Italy during the war, you simply must make this tour. I am attaching a couple of links to her web site below.

It was the best thing that we did in our 11 days in Italy!

That's wonderful information, thank you!

I'm surprised that most guidebooks have so little information about WW2 sites in Italy. I found an excellent summary of WW2 history in Italy, and especially Rome, originally written for Loyola University students studying in Rome. It can be downloaded here.

Hi Jeff, I highly recommend you using her tour. You will not regret it.

I found that most Italians don't really like to talk about World War II. It was not a particularly proud moment in their history. But Dr. Basaglia is different. She is very knowledgeable and recognizes the importance of exploring this part of their past. I hope you will utilize her services.

Thanks Steven. I have family connection to Monte Cassino as well and need to do this.

Daniela is great and a great resource. She had a conflict for our date, but asked a lot a questions about my father in law's regiment and planned out a great self guided tour for us.

Hi Steven. Thank you for your comments about your father and Monte Casino. I am traveling to Sicily in a week for the RS Sicily tour and then we're off on our own to Sorrento, Naples, Rome and Venice (with many stops and local guides in between). We had previously spent 21 days in Italy - so part of this is a retrace - Rome north. I just finished Atkinson's book "The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944" in preparation of our trip. I just was so saddened by the events, loss of life and heartened by the valor and sacrifices of all the soldiers. My father was in London (Navy) in 1943 and '44 but I had an uncle in Italy during that time. Unfortunately, there is no one that can talk of his experiences or exactly where he was and what he was doing there, other than fighting. My fathers's and aunt's letters are full of codes (in their letters) that my sister and I have tried to figure out but have not been very successful. Thus the book becomes our link to him and what must have been difficult times - just staying alive. So thank you for your comments and recommendations. Although our time is planned already, the comments are printed out and I hope that trip number 3 to Italy will be filled with more time between Naples and Rome and an exploration of the sites you mention.

Hi Rocky, thank you for your reply to my post. It sounds like your uncle may have been involved in intelligence. If anyone can find out more about him, it would be Danila. She recently was in Austin, Texas and was granted access to military archives regarding the Texas 36th division; archives and details that I never knew existed. I would highly recommend that you connect with her before your 3rd trip to Italy. Also, a great book to recommend called Return to Casino by Harold Bond. He wrote it in the 1960s about taking his family to the site of the Monte Casino battle from twenty years before. It is a very good first hand account. Take care!
