I'll be staying near Lucca during the World Cycling Championships in late September.With 1.5 million cycle racing fans jamming Florence and the rest of Tuscany, will it be difficult to take the train into Florence on the big race day of Sept. 29 (a Sunday)? An educated guess would be appreciated.

I'm betting that it will be difficult as well. But, all trains from Lucca to Florence are Regionale trains. As such, they cannot be sold out. If no seats, you can stand. No seat reservations permitted. It's similar to your local bus system in Baltimore. If they can cram you in the train and close the door, you're on. But, I'm betting that the train run originates in Lucca and its an empty train when you board.
