Working my way to Rome - Which city to go to first, Sienna or Florence?

Hello:
Could you please offer some advice?

For my 21 day trip in June, I am arriving in to Milan on June 2.

2 days in Milan to recover from jet-lag and see the Last Supper. Depart 6/4

to..

The CT for 4th-6th - Do you suggest Vernazza for a single woman?

Now here is where I need guidance in the hopes of avoiding back-tracking...hence less travel time....Do you suggest that I go to
Florence 6th -10th then Siena 10th -14the OR the other way around, with obviously Siena first. On the 14th, I will head down to Rome for a week, so perhaps my question is, what city offers the most efficient route to Rome?
Mostly, I will be traveling by train, but also a bus here and there..

Also, any favorite places in Milan and Vernnazza. All other reservation have been made, but they can switch them if need be.

Many thanks!
Take care,
Jan

If I am not mistaken Sienna is on the way to Rome. So you would do Florence first. Where are you staying in Rome ? Do you want to stay 4 days in Sienna and 7 in Rome or do you want to go somewhere ekse in between ?

I hear Sienna is quite sensational and it was suggested I stay there four nights and plan day trips if I wanted. Feeling rushed is not something I really want, so if I could explore that area w/Sienna as a base for a few days, do you think that is a good plan?
Thank you.

Take care,
Jan

One more thing to consider in weighing bus v. train is that trains have a lot more room to move around. The buses are more like an airplane. I vastly prefer trains over buses for anything over an hour. But the earlier posting is exactly right about the drawback of getting into and out of Siena - the train station is nowhere near the historic center.

Jan,
Consider going to Siena first, the train ride is only about a half hour or hour longer. The train from Florance to Rome is about an hour and a half while from Siena it is twice that.

hi Jan, just a note about the buses to/from Siena: the SITA bus company runs the buses between Florence and Siena, and the SENA bus company runs the buses between Rome and Siena. Both companies post their bus schedules online.

Thank you for the valuable insight.

Some time ago I made the hotel reservations: Florence first, followed by Siena. THEN, I looked at the map and bus/train schedules and began to scratch my head wondering if this is best. I think I will switch them.

Thanks again. Take care.
