My 21 year old neighbor is going to Italy to work as a nanny for 6 months. She'll be working for a German family and they are paying for her to take a class at the local university. She's having a difficult time getting information on visas. Does she need one? Is a student visa best? She will be taking the class the last three months of her stay. Can anyone offer advice? Thanks!
Susan,
I'd suggest that she contact her employer, as they may have some information on the Visa requirements. I suspect they would have to be involved in the process as well.
Cheers!
A student visa may cover her as some allow part time work. Additionally, some countries do not require visas for "nanny" positions. (They're referred to as "au pairs.")
Your best bet is to contact the closest Italian Consulate:

Not quite sure on the exact requirements but she will need a work visa and may need a Permesso De Sojourno(permission to stay) and Codice Fiscale ( fiscal code) as well. I would tell her to ask about these things and find out so as not to have any surprises after getting here.
Im looking into working in Italy myself and from what Ive researched there is a lot of paper work involved if she is going to stay more than 3 months on a work visa and yes her future employers would have to get involved as well. Ive already read that she needs to have this done BEFORE she gets there, as you cannot apply once you are there. And if she doesnt have this officially resolved beforehand, she would have to leave at the end of 3 months, come back to America and get it fixed, then return but only if it's fixed. If not, she wouldnt be able to return for a while as she had already reached the 90 day max. There is a great website that helps explain this and also gives the address of the Italian embassy she would need to visit because it depends on where you live. Once I find it I will send it to you.
Would you mind telling me how she found this job? It sounds like a great opportunity.
