How many nights are you staying in Rome and is that included in your 10 days? You should plan at least 3 days in Rome.

Then, you could combine some destinations and take day trips--for example, spend more nights in Siena and day trip to San Gimignano and Florence. Otherwise, you'll be moving every other night.

Hi Jo - The answer to your question is YES - It's doable - Could it be done a bit better - possibly BUT you want to see certain things and if you're a bit rushed so what? I was born in Rome and , of course it's a wonderful city BUT - On your first trip you do not have to spend three days there. You can see the highlights and return at another time. You can do what you want to do.

Ciao, Greg

I would agree with Sharon's suggestion of finding a couple of "bases" then travelling out from there...although I might choose Florence as my last one. Otherwise, you're going to spend a lot of time packing and unpacking, and lugging luggage back and forth to hotels. I would also agree with her suggestion of 3 days in Rome (including your arrival date.) There is so much to see and do, that time there would be well spent.
Nothing in Sharon's suggestions would prevent you from seeing all you want to see, but it may make it easier on your travelling.

Thanks everyone...your right we just can't do it all. This will be my 4th trip to Italy and it might as well be my first, I get so excited. Also it will be fun sharing with my sister since she has never been.

I also would recommend spending a few nights in Rome. It's one of the world's great cities, and deserves more time than people often give it.

Also, my personal opinion is that traveling at a slower pace is much more rewarding than rushing through an itinerary just to check places off your list.

Good point, Jo....I think I get more pleasure out of sharing places I've been, with friends and relatives, than they do out of the visit itself!

Just a few thoughts to add to the discussion. We did the whirlwind tour of Rome (2 days.) I know we will be back. After Rome and Orvieto, you can make your base in San Gimingnano and take some day trips in the surrounding area. Then on to Florence and then Venice. Are you planning on renting a car for Tuscany? If so, ditch it in Florence. Florence is walkable and then train to Venice. There's a lovely b&b right outside of San Gim. It's called IlVicario, very reasonable and out of the world hosts and food. You can check it out on TripAdvisor.
