Woo hoo! We're committed!

Just booked flights on Aer Lingus -- Chicago to Venice/Rome to Chicago -- for next May for less than $1,000 apiece. Last year, I spent months and months obsessively checking fares multiple times every day, only to finally panic and purchase at exactly the wrong time. We flew Aer Lingus last year and were totally satisfied, but this fare will be almost $1,700 less (for three of us) than we paid then.

Best part is that now it's done, many months in advance, and I can move on to fun stuff, like getting signed up for the Venice-Florence-Rome tour.

I had to push my dear, cautious wife to commit this early, but as many experienced travelers have suggested, if you find a decent fare with a comfortable itinerary, just grab it and never look back.

Yay!! Next time set up an alert on www.google.com/flights. Just search your dates and hit the track button on all the flights that appeal to you. Set it up as soon as you decide when you would like to go (can be a range of date if you are flexible) Google will track and send you an alert email when prices have gone up. The best feature is the chart that shows you when they adjust prices both up and down. I was able to save my mom $250 by using the chart to predict that the price jumps every 28 days but goes back down a few days later. And there are no tricks, they really are the lowest prices anywhere. You can click the link Google provides (which is how they get paid) or go directly to the site with the lowest price (which they show you).

I am including the link to my tracker but it may not work because you have to be signed into a google account.
Google.com/flights

BTW Yapta.com is also one Rick recommends but I don't like it as much as Google Flights. Also, be warned that Google Flights is VERY addicting. Especially the Explore Map view where you can put any departure city and see the price to fly anywhere in the world. When you have a little extra money it can be very tempting to head off to a random place like Bejing, China or Halifax, Canada...Today....same price, you choose. My 18 day trip to France and Italy in October started off as an August trip to my sorority convention at Disney world (Florida in August, what was I thinking?). When I added up the cost of the convention I decided I could go to Europe for the same price. My round trip (Portland to Paris and Rome to Portland) flights were less than $1000 combined (on IcelandAir and Condor). I bought them back in May. I am still tracking the budget airline hopper-flight between Paris and Rome and will book when my plans are firm. Those prices have been all over the board they all started at about $40 some have gone up just a few dollars and others are closer to $200 now. Like I said VERY addicting. :)

Have a great trip!

We used Aer Lingus last year to Amsterdam, love them. We scored tickets for $681 pp to Rome in February. As soon as I saw that price I called some family and we are now 6 people going. That was back in May. Sometimes those quick decisions turn out to be the best!

I found a website called visitacity.com which I have been playing around with for our trip. Also downloaded Rick's Rome book. Have fun planning.

Congratulations on securing your flights!

Does this mean you won't be planning your own trip?

Have you consider planning your own trip & saving more money still?

I've not taken any organized trip tours before, mainly because I like traveling at my own pace.

Happy planning!

Congratulations! I am sure that if you are taking the Rick Steves Best of Venice-Florence-Rome tour, it will be awesome!!!

Priscilla: We took our first Rick Steves tour (Best of Paris) last summer and enjoyed it hugely. We felt the guides and the information and direction they provided were a great value. Plus, as natural introverts, being part of the group forced us to be a little more social and interact with what turned out to be a wonderful bunch of travelers. We did a few days in London on our own before the Paris tour, and that was fine, but the RS experience was well worth whatever money we might have saved by ourselves.

Congratulations! You're in for a treat.

My wife and I spent last night hanging up artwork from our trip to Tuscany last December. We bought some original watercolors in Greve of the Greve's town square and of Radda, a small out of the way hill town. I also printed some favorite photos I took while there.

We traveled on our own, but I can certainly see the advantages of taking a RS tour. I'm glad to hear you've had good experiences with them in the past and I'm sure they'll take good care of you in Italy.

We were lucky. I travel a lot for work and get to put all expenses on my personal AMEX Skymiles card. In addition, my wife and I charge everything possible, then pay at the end of the month. We were able to use Skymiles to buy first class tickets to Rome for $444.00 each!

Congrats, stoutfella! Clicking that "Accept" button is the best feeling in the world! I'm also on the introvert scale and the best times I've had on trips have been when I was in groups. Have a ball!!
