Wonderful time in Italy but will never recommend Walks of Italy

Just back from a fantastic family trip to Italy (Rome / Florence / Vernazza / Venice) and appreciated the information I learned from these forums. The four RS pocket guides we had were also invaluable in all four locations we stayed. We also downloaded and utilized several of the RS audio tours and really enjoyed those free resources.

The only issue and frustration with the trip I wanted to share was related to two of our three Walks of Italy tours and the worst customer service follow up I have ever experienced. First, our guide for the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica tour was fantastic. Unfortunately, that was the only one of our family’s three tours that did not have significant problems.

From Rome, our Pompeii and Amalfi tour was extremely disappointing as the tour leader announced after the bus had departed Rome that we would be going to Pompeii and then Sorrento and not Positano as the tour had been scheduled. In the weeks before the tour Walks had sent an email regarding an option to “upgrade” to a tour that departed earlier in the day and would spend more time in Pompeii, however when I called to discuss this with a Walks representative, they informed me that this “upgrade” would go to Sorrento after Pompeii and did not include Positano. I declined the “upgrade” and confirmed my original booking and itinerary to Pompeii and then Positano would be honored and was told over the phone that it would be. Additional Walks ineptitude was shown the day of the tour as we gathered at the meeting place prior to the tour leaving and as I chatted with a Walks representative about how excited I was to see Positano that day, no mention of an itinerary change to Sorrento was even mentioned. This was extremely disappointing.

Our Venice in a Day with St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Gondola Ride tour was interesting, but certainly not exceptional. The frustration regarding this tour came afterwards dealing with Walks’ lack of response and insulting attempt to reimburse me. Venice had recently enacted some restrictions impacting guided tours which apparently impacted our tour. As a result, touring the inside of St. Mark’s Basilica did not occur. While I understand this ban was not something Walks can control, what they could control is how they handled it. We were informed there would be a reimbursement credit for this portion of the tour. Of the $536.40 I spent for my family of four, Walks eventually credited me $8.53. Furthermore, I later then spent an additional €120 (approx. $140 U.S.) for us to enter St. Mark’s on timed entry tickets.

After sending email communications and having several conversations with Walks representatives (who apparently aren’t authorized or empowered to resolve situations) over the phone, I asked for a supervisor or manager to get in touch with me to discuss these issues, there has been absolutely no response. There is no excuse for this kind of customer service and I will never use this company again, nor recommend them to anyone else. I am extremely disappointed with this company’s lack of response to resolve issues.

I would certainly recommend utilizing the fantastic Rick Steves' materials as much as possible and if booking a tour to certainly consider alternatives to Walks based on my recent experiences. Have a fantastic trip!

Hi Greg -
Sorry that communication issues messed up your tours.

Edited previous response: it does look like none of the advertised WOI Pompeii+ Amalfi trips go to Positano. If I was to guess why, it's due to the small town and the coastal road being overrun and difficult for the tour buses to manage. If it makes you feel any better, having been to both (we'd based in Sorrento and day-tripped the other) I don't know as you missed much as we preferred Sorrento. Still, even with its lovely viewpoints, it is considered to be on the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula and not the Amalfi Coast as advertised.

Venice: I see that the tour you booked is still advertising entry to St Mark's but a (sort of weak) disclaimer in the tour description states:

Please note that this description is an example and your experience
may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size.
Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent
experience.

I guess you could say that this covered their behinds with omission of the basilica but as it's a currently advertised highlight, I'd be curious to know which "recently enacted restrictions" affected your tour and could affect others.

Let us know what the office tells you when they respond to your complaints about both tours?

As I signed up for, and confirmed over the phone with one of their reps that tour to went to Positano, the issue is more the lack of and miscommunication from the company about this tour and also another tour we booked. Even the check in person the day of the Pompeii / Amalfi tour failed to mention this revision. Subsequently, it appears they have phased out Positano for Sorrento, but the issue is how poorly they handled and communicated this and dealt with issues from another tour. After numerous reach outs on my part, I am still waiting for someone from the company to get back to me. Walks has been really disappointing.

It's a shame to hear about your experience.

I've taken about 10 different tours with Walks and Devour, their partner company that specializes in food tours and culinary experiences. I've done several in Italy and also in Spain. Of the 10, 1 was a tad disappointing (the guide didn't really engage with us in a meaningful way). The others were all very good to excellent.

Walks of Italy (https://www.walksofitaly.com/) is a partner or subsidiary of Walks (https://www.takewalks.com/). Looking at the branding of the two websites, it's clear they are all one company (along with Devour). And they have the same Customer Service phone number.

I think they're a well-respected company. They certainly have excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. But even good companies mess up from time to time, and that's what it seems happened here. I daresay you'll find some negative reviews for even the best tour companies (including Rick Steves). No company gets it right 100% of the time. I would keep at it with customer service, because I believe you are owed a better response and more appropriate refund. Rather than asking for a call back from a manager, I would ask the CSR (customer service rep) to escalate the issue immediately to a supervisor. They should always be able to get someone higher up on the phone for you.

Welcome to the forum, Greg, I hope you'll come back and post about some of your positive travel experiences.

I agree with you; I had two bad experiences with WOI in 2022. First, they moved my Venice tour to another day on short notice (the same one you did), due to lack of staff. Things happen, I can forgive them for that. Luckily I had some flexibility in my itinerary, but it did mean I had to eat the cost of moving my doge’s palace tour to another day as that ticket was non-refundable. The reason I bring up the Venice tour is that the same issue with St. Mark’s as you mentioned was cited as the reason we couldn’t go in as part of the tour! I can’t believe they’re still saying ‘recent changes’ three years later. The guide said we would be refunded, but I never received a refund and didn’t bother following up, mainly because of the second issue I’ll mention next. The cynic in me thinks they advertise St Mark’s as part of their tour so people will actually book it, knowing the tour won’t actually go in. I, too, had to buy a timed entry ticket myself and wait in line for an hour. Really irritating.

The other issue I had was that they had to move my Milan tour including the Last Supper earlier in the day, and if it didn’t work I could cancel and get a refund. It didn’t work for me, so I requested the refund. It took WEEKS of chasing them, talking to different people, them insisting they had refunded me and me showing them my bank account statements to get the refund. I’m like you, never again.
