Women's dress for the opera in Venice?

We have (good) seats for Tosca at La Fenice and don't want to insult the locals by wearing touristy/American/overly casual garments. Opera night is the most dressed up we'll need to be during our whole stay in Italy, and we're trying to pack very light. All other clothing is casual. What should we wear? Would adding jewelry and strappy sandals to a flowy ankle-length dress (that on other days could be a sun dress) do the trick?

Hi Rosanne, the long dress will be fine. I attended La Fenice and just wore a lightweight black sweater over a black dress with some inexpensive gold jewelry and black ballet shoes.

We always pack very light, too, so I was happy that the dress that I wear with a bright scarf on several days during the trip (washes and dries overnight) could serve multi-purposes.

Enjoy your trip!

Dress nice, no need to go overboard. I will add that my one time at La Fenice, the people who really dressed to impress were the date-night crowd.

Dress. I went to La Fence on 3/24 and saw Carmen. My seat was in stall A and everyone was dressed. I was sitting among locals all speaking Italian and well dressed. I saw everything from cocktail to long formal, but nothing less. Most of the men were nice suits no tuxes. I wore a dressy jumpsuit and jacket. Jumpsuit was great easy to pack and no wrinkles. My goal was like yours, this was my only dressy event during my time in Italy. Go early so you can walk around the theater.

Thanks very much for these replies. I feel reassured, and will also pass the info along to my (adult) daughter.
