ideas with kids, Genoa to Florence by car?

We are driving from Finale Ligure to Florence (in a day) with 2 and 4 year old boys in June and are eager to space out the car ride with destinations to eat and run around.

Pisa is a must, but where can we stop that is car friendly in between Finale Ligure and Pisa that would be worth the visit and hassle? any part of the cinque terre? portofino? viareggio? We hope to plan this out in advance so the only thing left to chance is the mood and sleep schedule of our kids, we are not familiar with the region and we are grateful for any insights.

Thanks!

Cinque Terre and car friendly are to most, mutually exclusive terms.

I have not driven your route, but have been to CT, and cars there are about as useful as a hole in a life raft.

Definitely explore other options for your rest stop(s)

Between Sestri and La Spezia (where the Cinque Terre are) the freeway veers away from the coast, therefore not only the CT aren’t car friendly but are also a distance from the A12 freeway where you will be traveling. Also your kids are very small and the waters in the CT coast tend to drop quickly.

I would wait till you cross the border with Tuscany and exit at VERSILIA exit on the A12. From there drive straight to the coast (west). You will be between Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, two famous resort towns. I used to spend my summers there. In June it’s not crowded yet, beaches are large and sandy and more appropriate for toddlers, since the water doesn’t get deep as quickly.

Forte dei Marmi is probably one of the most exclusive and upscale resorts on the Tuscan Coast, so you might even run into some VIP there, but it’s not super expensive for the rich and famous only, otherwise I could not have spent my vacations there.

Santa Margherita Ligure or Camogli would be nice places to stop.
