Just take the bus (leaves every half hour, start at about 8am as I recall) down the Amalfi Coast, stop somewhere for lunch on the way back.

You can stop at various places on the bus ride but you need a new ticket for each segment or a day pass; or, for the ride back, take a ferry from Amalfi and stop in Positano.

I'm trying to plan a trip here at the end of March and am curious about the suggestion of the ferry at this time of year- I was under the impression they were not running based on the websites I have visited. Which ferry company is running between the coastal towns?

Is the ferry running now from Amalfi to Positano?
Not sure it would be but if not just buy a one day bus pass and take the SITA bus from Sorrento
Stop in Positano for a couple of hours walk down to the beach and then board the same bus head to Amalfi, walk to the Duomo (museum and cloisters inside the Duomo are both worth while) and shops there for a couple of hours.
if you had more time I would suggest you take the bus from Amalfi to Ravello to see the views up there but with a half day or so free that is not going to work out I am afraid.
Just take the same SITA bus you took the rest of the day back to Sorrento and enjoy the views of the coastal road.
If you only have time for one town to explore my vote would be Positano over Amalfi but I would still take the time to ride the bus down to Amalfi and back before returning to Sorrento. From what I remember the most enjoyable parts of the road were shortly after Positano.

Please report back what it was like at this time of year, were shops open, etc..
