winter in Sorrento

Just wondering about winter weather along the Amalfi Coast. I'm thinking sometime between November and January. Decent travel weather or not? How cold, wet and uncomfortable might it be?

I think Google will give you the most accurate info. Since every year varies, anecdotal responses aren't helpful to predict next Nov-Jan. Statistical averages would be more helpful.

I was there in mid-February, in uncommonly wintery weather including snow on the mountains. I think that's pretty rare, they told me it had been well over 20 years since Rome had last seen snow. I stayed in Sorrento and loved it. Out of 5 days , only one was really sunny. The only day I was uncomfortably cold and wet was my day in Herculaneum with almost constant drizzle until about 3 pm and I was not wearing my warmest clothes. It was still a great day. Mostly it was dry with temps aroung 12-18 during the day (celsius). I think November and December are more likely to be warmer and drier than January and February.

It's pretty rainy on the coast in winter. I had access to a live cam for a while until they shut it down. As I watched each day in November and December, it was raining. People were bundled up in down jackets. It looked cold! With global warming...you never know what you are going to get. Look at the US with the drought/flooding, etc. If you are prepared for the worst, you will be fine. You certainly will have most towns to yourself, just you and the locals. Keep in mind a lot of stores may be shut because it's not tourist season, and the days will be very short for sunlight.

We spent a week thre last December, mid-month. It was cool to cold, but sunny most of he time. In Amafli we went without coats in the afternoon. At Pompeii it was gloves, hats and scarves (40-45 degrees F), but beautiful sun. One day we had a thunderstorm, but it only lasted a couple of hours. When I see the pictures of hoards of people in Pompeii, I realize what a special experience we had going in winter as we had the place almost to ourselves. Plan for rain and cold and hope for sun and cool!
