Winter in Rome

Going to Rome for the first time. It will be after Christmas & before New Years. Any recommendations? What should I expect weather-wise, as well?

I thought the 1st reply was very helpful re the weather.

There are also other weather websites you can google which will give actual data or averages for prior years. Of course, these are only averages but will give you some idea.

Of course averages are only averages, and no one can really know, more than a week or two out, what the actual weather will be for your dates. Starting about 10 days from your time in Rome, actual forecasts for your dates will start to become available. These will improve in accuracy the closer you get to your time in Rome, for example, the forecasts starting 5 days before your dates will be even more accurate.

And it doesn't hurt to keep checking the weather forecasts right up to your departure date.

I have been there 3 times that time of year since 2002. The weather is always mild by Midwest America standards but cold by Florida standards

We lucked out last year end of February as it was glorious weather-wise, especially coming from Chicago that time of year. Mid-to-high 50's during the day, 1-2 days over 60, 40-45 degrees at night & early morning, perfect for brisk walks along the Tiber River. Friends of ours winter in Rome yearly and had an apartment way north by Porta Pia, and we saw firsthand how Romans do their daily living without many tourists about. Just wonderful.

One restaurant to recommend? Pizzeria Emma, near Campo de' Fiori. Fabulous & reasonably-priced up & down the board. They are owned by the Roscioli family, who have the nearby Antico Forno bakery, a daily stop from pastries for breakfast or Roman pizza slices for lunch, different ones daily. First day I tried a escarole/salsiccia/cannellini bean slice--tremendous--then was bummed out that they only serve this variety once a week.

Enjoy your planning!
