winter in northern italy, french riviera

I'm in northern italy 28 december through 9 january.
Any particular notes or suggestions for a single girl? Will I have trouble finding lodging, food, sightseeing being so close to the holidays?

rose, I've never travelled at that time of year, but doubt that you'll have trouble finding lodging or food. Even though it's "off season", I'd probably still pre-book lodgings, especially as some smaller family-run places may be closed over the holidays. That shouldn't be a problem with large Hotels. Some Museums and other sights may also be closed or operating with reduced hours. Where are you planning on going in northern Italy and the French Riviera? I can't offer any "suggestions for a single girl", but wearing a Money Belt would be a good idea. The Guidebooks have good information on other "areas of concern" in the locations you'll be travelling. Happy travels!

I plan to see a show at La Scala on 28th December. Would love to spend some time in Genoa, Bologna, Cinqueterre, Lake Como and Ski for a day. I've never been to France or Switzerland, so I thought it might be nice to step foot in Nice and Lake Lugano. Do you have any particular suggestions for that area.
And Thank You for your help!

I was in CinqueTerra in November a couple years ago and it was pretty slow. Hotels were still open, but many restaurants/bakeries were closed, or were closing soon, for the season. But because it was slow, it gave me and my travel companions a chance to interact more with the locals.
