Wineries in Sicily??

Can anyone recommend wineries to visit?? I am looking specifically for input from those who have traveled independently and not as part of a group. I will be covering most of the island periphery, so could go many places. I am having trouble finding info online except for Planeta. It which I'm worried will be big and commercial. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Take a look at www.gambinowinery.com. We have traveled independently to Sicily for over 10 years. Gambino is one of the wineries we have always returned to. They are located above Linguaglossa on Mt. Etna. Their website provides directions and GPS coordinates. Their wines range from whites, a rosato and reds typical of the Etna growing area.

Chris and Roberto,

Thanks so much. Appreciate your help (well, all but my liver does...haha)!

Before visiting Sicily several years ago, I ran across a book about Sicilian wineries - Palmento by Robert Camuto. He was in town for a book reading and so I bought his book. Excellent reading. The only winery we visited was COS, near Ragusa in the southeast. It has an interesting history: three friends restored the vineyard that had been in one's family. We stayed at COS Locanda and it was a highlight of our trip. Enjoy!

Belated suggestions:

We visited with a group (small - 10 people) and it seemed like all the wineries were able to accommodate visits with prior reservations.

We had a visit with Planeta at Sambuca and it was small, personal, and better than most every visit I've had in the US. Great place, lovely wines that never make it to the US.

We also visited wineries in Marsala, Trapani, Menfi, Ragusa.

If you would like more info and contacts, I'll dig through my notes. Send me a PM.

We were quite surprised (happily) with the white wines.

I second Chris's suggestion of Gambino Winery. We were there last year and loved it.
