We will be driving south of Naples toward the boot visiting Matera, Lecce, Gallipole and Ostini in early January in early January. Anyone know of any vineyards or wine tasting spots? Also on our last stop we will be more north on the coast and plan to stop at Pescara but does anyone recommend any place else such as Termoli and Vasco. We need an apartment or B&B for 5 for 2 nights.

Puglia and Abruzzo are not really areas of 'Rickspertise.' But Mario Batali's nonna is from Abruzzo and he describes Puglia as "the next Tuscany." Here's the url for that: http://www.mariobatali.com/exploreItalyDtl.cfm?rid=14 Try Rough Guide or Lonely Planet for more info on these destinations.
In the past six months there have been many postings here regarding Puglia and there is plenty of eye witness information in there that might be helpful. A simple search of the archives will retrieve it.
I definitely suggest San Gregorio (www.feudi.it). It is east of Naples and has an incredible restaurant. As Americans living in Naples I find this place a real treat.
Dean, we did Puglia, from Trani south. We used the Lonely Planet guidebook to plan our trip, and found it to be invaluable. We loved staying in Lecce (don't even attempt it without a GPS) and visiting Galopoli, Matera, Ostuni, and drving downm the wild East coast, etc. When we are looking for apts to rent in the EU we usually use VRBO or Homelidays.com. You may also want to check out some of the Masserias for lodging options. The NY Times did a great article on Puglia a couple of years ago: http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/travel/06Puglia.html?pagewanted=all
