Wineries in Province of Pisa

Hi,
We will be residing in Lucca and are trying to figure out how to see leaning tower of Pisa (something for the 3 teenagers in our group) and visit a winery in the same day (something for the 3 adults). At first we thought we could go to Montecarlo in the first part of the day then go to Pisa, but now that seems like we will going in opposite directions for the day.

Pisa hills seems like a more time efficient option? We do not have a car, so we are looking for some transportation guidance. If we go into the Pisa hills, like Pontedera? then maybe Ghizzano for the winery?, should we hire a car (or combo of train and bus/car) to get there from Lucca? But then can we take a train from Pontedera or nearby town to get to Pisa to see the tower?

I know this is not the finest wine area that Tuscany has to offer, but if you you have any other winery suggestions from Lucca that can accommodate Pisa later, it would be greatly appreciated. We are looking to have lunch of course at the winery!
Thanks,
Sam

The wineries are spread out and the hours are limited so a car would be needed. Those I've seen look like small operations so you may not find one that's visitor-oriented as in California or France. Have a look at this association organized around a wine road through the Colline Pisane DOC. http://www.stradadelvinocollinepisane.it/language/en/

San Miniato is a lovely historic town in its own right and famous for its truffles. Beware the drive times, it looks like a small area but it can be slower travelling than you expect.

hey saminats
what makes you think not the finest wine area? i think you should give it a chance. you are traveling during a very busy season with crowds everywhere. going to areas not well known to tourists away from the crowds will bring smiles and happiness without stress.

take the train to pisa morning, let the kids enjoy (don't forget to reserve if climbing tower opapisa.it), train to viareggio for beach time food and relaxing, then train to lucca evening.
check tourist info kiosk in lucca for available things to do or places to go, ask your host/hostess, ride bikes within or outside the walls, sit in piazza with vino and appetizers people watch, stroll shops, cafes, side streets, stop at outdoor market, buy goodies and have a picnic, enjoy the evenings, have pizza at a hole in the wall pizzeria de felice, anyone interested in cooking class? cucina-italiana.com or extravirginlucca.com, take a drive or tour up into the countryside barga and the devils bridge. hope this gives you ideas and thoughts for the gang. enjoy have fun

So actually we were planning to go to Viareggio on a Monday this August. So I think we will leave early morning, go to Pisa then Viareggio. That will give us another day then to visit a winery.

Thank you for the food suggestions and Collodi suggestion
