We will be on a cruise this summer and don't want to go to Rome when we are in port in Civitavecchia. I am looking for an affordable way to check out some wineries, countryside, towns or sites in the area. Any ideas for a day trip or tour from this port would be appreciated. We are traveling with four adults in our group.
The problem is that Civit... is not all that interesting. We have passed through (emphasis on through) six times over the past few years. Mostly an industrial port city. I am not aware of any wineries in the area. There are some tuscan ruins/museum in Tarquinia reachable via public transit. We had planned to visit the last time but arrived on a Monday when everything was closed. You might try Whatsinport.com. It is good web site for local attractions.
The $150 to $200 price pp for four people you mentioned on your Spain post as being too high, will be a problem. That has to cover a day's wages of a skilled English speaking driver/guide, allowance for the use of a comfortable vehicle, fuel, GST. Your talking $600 to $1000 for sure. I see there are some services that will pick you up at the pier, drive you up to Tuscany for a day of visiting vineyards and tasting rooms and bring you back to the ship in 8 to 9 hours. You might also wait and see what will be offered by the cruise ship.
Maybe you could rent a car for a day and drive on your own, get a guide book, designate a driver (have an International Driving Permit), and do it on your own.
Rick's Mediterranean Cruise Ports book suggests Miles&Miles, which offers this countryside excursion for €625: https://www.milesandmiles.net/index.php/tours/PrenotTour/37
I also see Driver In Rome (found on Google) charging €550 for 4 people on their countryside shore excursion: http://www.driverinrome.com/civitavecchia_shore_excursions_italy_wine_tasting_7.html
We hired a private car and driver through www.shoreexcursionsinitaly.net. We were picked up at the pier in Civitavechia port and the driver took us to Siena in Tuscany, where we had some wine tastings, in old interesting wineries. Great visit to this beautiful city as well and we came back to the port at the end of this great day! Civitavechia area is not a wine one, so that was the option!
