Wine tastings in Orvieto?

We've rented a car for a day to drive from Rome to Florence, and want to visit a winery or two along the way. (And eat lunch somewhere too!)

We can't visit the one listed in RS book (which is closed on Sundays) do we need to plan ahead to find a winery in Orvieto? Or are they plentiful and easy to find? Any advice?

(P.S., we're also planning to visit Montalcino to try some authentic Tuscan red wine!)

We stayed in Orvieto and Montalcino. If I only had a day I would go to Montalcino. You can taste wine and have lunch in the town but it will probably be busy with day trippers. We visited 2 wineries and enjoyed both. Castella Banfi and Il poggio Antica. The people were wonderful and I think you can have lunch at both. Incredible scenery in the area as well. Both are located not too far from Montalcino. If you need more info. just send me an email.

We're not certain realistically how long we'll have. We will pick up the car in Rome at 9 AM, and want to be in Florence for dinner, definitely by 9 or 10 PM.

So we have 12 hours to fill with driving, food and wine. Google Maps says 5 hours for the driving.

Of course, it's on a Sunday so most things are apparently closed :-(
