I am 26 and am planning a 10 day trip for my sister for her 29th birthday to either France or Italy in March. We have already booked our round trip ticket from Atlanta to Ireland, but the plan is to detour to either France or Italy for 4-5 days of wine tastings. We have gone previously before and done day tours with larger groups of 25-30 people and the goal is to avoid such large crowds. Is there an easy way to get to different wineries without renting a car? Are there any wineries that could be reached by train transport or does anyone know of wineries that offer a pick up service (I saw a few in France).
Also, we are not opposed to day tours if anyone has and they would recommend, but we are looking for things off the beaten path that will not break the bank.
Check out Beaune in Burgundy. The tastings are held at the Caves in town.
