Wine purchase from the States

We visited Italy last May and had a wonderful time. What a surprise to see how affordable wines are there. We visited a vineyard and had some Chianti shipped home. Loved it not only for the taste but we didn’t get the headaches we do with wine here the next day. We recently went to reorder and found there is a $50 wire transfer cost which significantly raises the cost of the order. Does anyone know where we can purchase wine to be shipped here that accepts PayPal or Venmo?

If you still have the winery's name and information try an Internet search to see if it's sold here. Your local wine shop might be able to get it or have a similar style. The headache you often get is usually from high tannins or high alcohol or both (not sulfite). You might consider telling your local wine merchant about this and see if he has a smoother tannnin lower alcohol wine. Many American wines really push the limit with alcohol. I often encounter 15-16% whereas Chianti is 12-12.5% tops by law. Also, we drink our wines young here so the tannins are coarse. They smooth out with age and you'll find most Chianti and other Sangiovese based wines have a few years of age. Branch out and try some others, but avoid those high alcohol high tannin monsters.

Download the TransferWise app and you’ll find a reasonable cost. 🍷

I second the recommendation to use Transferwise if it is only the wire transfer cost standing between you and the vino. Shipping fees are usually quite high, though. Are you sure you cannot find it from a U.S. importer online?

When we've been in Italy, many of the vineyards have said that it is cost prohibitive for them to ship to the States through an import agent.

I have no advice except to go back to Italy. ;-) (And what a great excuse to return!)

I had 6 bottles of olive oil and 6 bottles of wine shipped from Orvieto (separate venders). The shipper used DHL and it arrived at my home in a week. I think the cost was around 60 euros for each shipment or so but the cost of each bottle of olive oil was 12 euros and a similar price for the wine. I consider this a great deal because of the of and low cost for the quality. The sellers handled everything and I got email confirmation of the shipping and delivery.

Cafetista we have done the same thing, but it is an added level of complexity when you are this side of the Atlantic.

Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA/USA:
https://shop.kermitlynch.com/italy/

Kermit has worked in Italy for nearly as long as he’s worked in
France—a common misconception since he’s well known for importing
French wine. He’s imported many Italian greats over the years—Aldo
Conterno, Vietti, Poggio di Sotto, and more recently Giuseppe
Quintarelli and A. & G. Fantino to name just a few. The wines of Italy
continue to be a large focus as we continue to grow the number of
wines we import.

We currently import wines from 13 regions of Italy, from 41 producers
with our most recent imports coming from Marche and Sardinia.

Added Note: I'm a bit puzzled as to why you need to be the importer of a retail quantity of Italian wine. Are you in a rural location that does not have a selection of imported wine? Or are you trying to import from a small producer not offered by American wine merchants? Or is there a "bottle shock" issue: http://www.wineeducation.com/bottleshock.html

In 1990 Kermit Lynch wrote "Adventures on the Wine Route" in which,
among other things, he advocated shipping wine in refrigerated
containers. Before the book he may well have been the only one to do
so. After the book, and to this day, more wine is shipped in reefers,
but far from all.

US CBP: https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/212/~/requirements-for-importing-alcohol-for-personal-use

How do I import alcohol for my personal use?

Shipping alcoholic beverages by mail is prohibited by U.S. postal
laws. The importer must be 21 to bring alcoholic beverages into the
United States.

Shipping alcoholic beverages through a courier is permitted, however,
duty will be collected on the entire shipment (there is no duty
exemption for alcohol not accompanying a traveler), and the courier
will probably charge handling and Customs Broker fees that could
significantly raise the cost of the shipment.

Please be aware that State ABC laws govern how much alcohol a person
may import into their state without a license and those laws are
enforced by CBP. You must check with the state ABC board where your
shipment will enter the country to determine their limits.
