My friend and I will be in Tuscany Oct.10-17. Is this too early for the wine harvest? Is there a particular vineyard that one would suggest visiting?
Vintners don't harvest wine....they harvest grapes. Sorry, I couldn't resist. It is a great time. Pick a few for eating yourself. Early in the morning you will hear the small crawler tractors moving in the vineyards. Clusters of small cars parked at obscure locations. The men (and some women) have been up before dawn and will come back to those cars at sunset. They will not have time to give you a handholding tour at their crushing plants. But if you stay out of their way they may let you watch. Well worth your patience. Oh, and it is time for fungi and snails.
We were in Tuscany during this same week in 2005 and the grapes had all been picked. I think I remember them saying the harvest was in Mid to late September.
