My friend and I would like to experience the wine country and stay two nights. We do not have a car. Is Is there a location in reasonable distance form a train where we may learn about the local wines? And stay amongst the vineyards? We are coming from Lucca and will proceed to Milan.

Which wine country? The entire Italian peninsula is a huge wine country.

If you are staying at a hotel, they may be able to find a tour for you. Asti is a great city for Spumante wines. Try googling "wine tours Piedmont" for some ideas.
