Wine country touring... rent a car? bus? or...?

Hi,
We will be leaving Cinque Terra to Montepluciano (southeast of Siena)for a three day stay at a B&B. We are interested in everything that that area has to offer... great scenery, food, wine tasting etc.

Should we head back to Florence airport first to rent a car? Or would it be more efficient to rent it elsewhere (both time and money)? Or should we take a train to Siena and rent a car there? We would also like to join a wine tour group, so may be car is only needed for two days only? Following the three day stay we will be headed to Rome for three nights.

Thank you!

You didn't say when you will be there, however, go to www.expedia.co.uk, and check the rates. I personally prefer stumbling around in the countryside seeking out wineries and such, and a GPS bought in the US can usually have EU maps loaded on it. I did a brief check for a May 2 day rental from Siena, and it was 88 pounds, insurance included(about US150). You can call their 800# (011-44-xxx)and ask about renting there and maybe dropping at one of the Rome airports--the daily rat may drop considerably. Good hunting!

We picked up our car in Florence but on the other side to avoid the dreaded tickets(via del Gelsimino) with Autoeurope. We did Radda in Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano. It was a bit of work without GPS and signage is difficult in Italy. We had reservations in advance for various wineries. We dropped the car off in Chiusi and trained to wonderful Orvieto for two nights before ending in Rome. Great trip!Have fun!
