Wine country tips?

I'm planning to be in the Rome - Venice area in August. Any wine country tips, such as good daytrips, cafes, etc? Would Florence be a better base from which to explore wine country?

Chianti was the first wine I ever really drank, so it has a special place in my heart. I also like Italian wine in general. Thanks in advance!

Orvieto Classico!!!! YUM. It is a nice white wine. My husband loves (forgive the butchered spelling on this one) Noblis di Montepulciano. We paid about $10 a bottle Montepulciano and here the same wine is $68 a bottle!!!

If you like Chianti try Morellino di Scansano from the little town of Scansano in southern Tuscany. The Morellino di Scansano Sassato D.O.C. 2006 was really good and only 7 euro a bottle. Try the Enoteca-Ristorante La Cantina in via Botte in Scansano for a wonderful meal and a huge wine seller to try and buy. Other wonderful reds are found in Montefalco (mid Umbria), try the Rosso di Montefalco 2003 from Arnaldo-Caprai. There are so many good wines in Tuscany and Umbria it's difficult to know what to say and what to leave out but if you can get a copy of Burt Anderson's Italian Wine Guides he has information about the best vineyards and wines in Italy updated every year.
