Planning a trip to northern Italy March 19- April 5. I am concerned that the week of US spring break will lead to larger crowds than normal for March in Venice, Florence and Rome? Should I be?
I doubt the spring break in the US will add significant crowds to anything. Even if all American students on spring break chose Europe as their destination it would be like adding a spoonful of water to your swimming pool. It won't flood.
To make those places significantly more crowded than normal you need special circumstances, like the Jubilee or the Regatta or the Holy Week or Carnival in Venice.
A quick browse on the Internet suggests that Girls Gone Wild never made it to Italy. If The Boot is beyond the ken of that popular porn guide to Spring Break, probably Italy is not going to be flooded with American undergrads. The series, by the way, went bankrupt, which is where it always was morally.
Not every school takes spring break at the same time, anyway. My college is off March 3-9, the university down the street is off the following week.
I agree, Italy is not really a Spring Break destination, plus you would be at the outside of Spring Break time with your dates.
You will also miss Carnivale and Easter, really all of Holy Week, those are the events I would watch out for; so your trip is really in the lesser crowded off or shoulder season.
Given that the weather is improving then, lesser crowds, a great time to visit those cities.
