Will this Itinerary work?

Day 1 arrive Rome, stay 3 nights
Day 4 train to Salerno, ferry, bus to Praiano, stay 3 nights
Day 7 taxi to Pompeii, will wait and take to Naples bus station for evening train to Florence for 3 nights
Day 10 rent car and stay somewhere in Tuscany countryside for 4 nights, possibly around Siena or Montepulciano
Day 14 drive to CT/Portovenere area for 3 nights
Day 17 Train from La Spezia (is this best station?) to Lake Como for 3 nights
Day 20 Train to Venice for 3 nights
Day 23 Fly home from Venice

My questions are
Should we stay in Rome first before Amalfi? or just head directly there? our flight arrives at 7:30 am. Initial thought was to have a break from travel for a few days. Does it make sense to go directly to Florence from Naples on the fast train instead of train to Rome/rent a car and explore Tuscany before Florence?
Please don't try to convince me to do less, just help me do what I have planned in the most efficient manner with train/car travel. Our tickets are booked to Rome/from Venice on those days and can't be changed.
Thank you so much!!

I am not sure how travel affects you, but I would prefer to get to Praiano the first day, it's much more laid-back than Roma.

For overall efficiency, after Amalfi Coast, I would go to Roma (maybe stop in Napoli for the archeological museum since you are going to Pompeii) for your nights there, then continue your itinerary.

If we go to Rome after Pompeii, do you think we should go to Florence after that? or rent the car in Rome and drive through Tuscany countryside with that part of the trip next?
Thank you so much!

I would not necessarily change the order of your destinations. It can make sense to sleep at the city you fly to and minimize additional transport connections on that arrival day.

You don't need a car for the Cinque Terre area. All 5 towns are served by train (but Portovenere is not, just by bus and boat). After Tuscany, I would drop the car in La Spezia, take a train to stay in one of the 5 towns, and again take trains from that town to Milano Centrale station and continuing to Lake Como (Varenna is served by train and from there, you can take a ferry to Bellagio or Menaggio, among others).

How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. Simply search to or from the CT town that is your destination. These schedules are easy to print and to see for weeks in advance, but don't reflect the Milan-Varenna line; that schedule is at www.trenitalia.com, which also sells advance-discount tickets for the faster trains.
