Will Opel Zafira wagon hold a bicycle case?

We are renting a car in Como to travel to the Piedmont region. My husband has a bicycle case (dimensions 47" long, 30" high, 11" wide). I have researched the size of the baggage compartment with all but the 2 front seats folded down (64 cubic feet; max length of cargo 9 feet), and it would seem to be big enough, but can't find the dimensions of the tailgate. We will have two small suitcases as well. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

He should take a Bike Friday and then you would not have to ask the question. I think you will be fine. With the case laying flat, it is only 30" wide which is less the width of the rear hatch.

Frank, if my husband wanted to buy a folding bike and use it for the week-long bicycle tour we're going on, then you are correct in saying that we wouldn't need to ask the question. However, that isn't the case in our situation. We understand that traveling with a bike case can be a challenge, which is why I'm inquiring ahead of time about the Opel Zafira.

Are you implying that a Bike Friday is not suitable for a week long tour?

No, I'm just saying that we aren't going to spend the money to buy a Bike Friday just for this trip. No insults intended for those who swear by fold-up bikes. I'm just trying to find out information relevant to our particular situation. :)

We converted about four years ago. The hassle of dealing with bike cases (two for us),the surcharging of the airlines, the damage, storing cases, etc. became too much. Life is simpler with one suitcase but NOW we are being charged to check that bag. Cannot win. Still free on international. And we do get some odd looks from time to time. Been known to assemble the bike in the luggage area and ride off.
